Mimbo – Free WordPress Magazine Theme

mimbo.pngThis is one of the best free WordPress themes I have came across on the net. Since it is free, I thought I would share it with you guys.

It’s called Mimbo Magazine Theme. It was developed by Darren Hoyt (dot com).

Template looks great, it can also generate sub-menus as a drop down menu. You can see it in action here: view demo. You may download the theme here.

Real life example of a blog that is running on Mimbo is PlagiarismToday.com.

Note: If you are looking for a better premium magazine theme, check out Revolution Theme. It’s the best so far on the net!

Common mistakes of a new blogger

Every blog goes through different stages. First, as a new blog (beginning stage), then a growing stage, then maturity stage (and hopefully no decline stage). It is in beginning stage that many of us make mistakes. In this post, I would like to discuss some of these mistakes that new bloggers make. I will start the list, and hopefully you will complete it by contributing in the comments section.

Display RSS chiklet too early

Displaying your RSS count too early can have a detrimental effect on your RSS readership growth. Usually people will not subscribe when a blog has 10+ RSS readers. People like to follow the majority, because common sense tells them that, if many people are reading something – it must be interesting! On the other hand, when nobody (or less people) is reading a particular blog, they see no reason to subscribe to its RSS, neither will they visit back in the future.

Therefore in the beginning it’s better not to display your RSS count, it’s better to concentrate on writing good articles instead. When you have at least several hundred RSS readers, then you may put it up.

Display too many ads

Most bloggers want to make money with their blogs, and new bloggers are no different. One of the mistakes that new bloggers make is, putting too many ads on their blog. They think the more ads they put on their blog, the more money they will make. (Wrong!) They might make more money during the first few days, but later their blog will be cannibalized by their ads, thus generating very low income or no income at all.

The blog that have too many ads on it, simply cries out to new readers saying “Go back, and never come back to this blog again!”.

Start the blog on free blogging platforms

Making money from blogging is not an easy thing, so new bloggers take it with caution. Their caution results in starting a blog with free blogging services like blogspot. They don’t want to invest any money beforehand, rather, they want to see first if the blog will bring any money to them. They reason such: “If the blog starts to bring some money, I will shift it to its own domain name and hosting”. But often times that never comes!

If you really want to make money with your blog, you should make the initial investment in it. It’s not a big investment after all, because domain name costs maximum $9/year, hosting at godaddy is just $3.99/month. But this small step can make a big difference. Especially when it’s combined with good articles, good marketing and good design, which is the next topic of discussion.

Design their own theme

There are some new bloggers who instead of using some of the great free themes available online, resort to designing their own themes. I simply do not understand them. It is ok if they design a nice professional theme, the problem arises when they have a theme that looks like the websites of 90s. The graphics are most probably done in Microsoft Paint (funny video about paint).

So if you are not good at designing blog themes, just get the ready ones. Or ask someone to design it for you.

Not posting own ideas

What is the most important success factor for a blog? It’s the person behind the blog, more specifically it’s his/her ideas that make the blog successful and set it apart from other blogs.

Unfortunately, new bloggers make a mistake of talking only what the blogosphere is talking. If a big shot guy says A, new blogger will say A. If he says B, he say B… etc. Therefore if you want to be successful, then you should start posting your own ideas and thoughts. Because people want what is in your mind, not what is in someone else’s mind and that you just summarize it for them.

Posting irregularly

Imagine this: You are a new blogger, your blog just started with 1 unique visitor a day (that is yourself ;). After some time, you have gained quite a number of regular readers. In order to retain these readers and gain more readers, you need to post consistently. At least one post a day, but for the beginning 2-3 posts a day can be a good idea too.

If you post irregularly, and worse after missing 3-4 days you post something that is not even interesting, then you can be sure to your readers. And won’t be successful in getting new readers. Therefore posting interesting posts consistently is very important, and it is one of the things that makes your blog successful. (read my article on posting frequency here)

Your contribution

What other mistakes you think should be included here? Please share it with us. It can be your own mistake that you did in the beginning of your blogging career or a mistake that you see often on new blogs. Let’s make this a useful post for new bloggers.

Google detects image ads and “nofollow’s” it by itself

If you are offering advertisement opportunities that pass PageRank to other sites, in other words SEO friendly ads. And if you are doing this through traditional banners (e.g 468×60, 790×80, 300×250, and now 125×125), then you can be sure that they are not SEO friendly after all.

Even if those banners do not have “nofollow” tag on them, they can only bring pure traffic and not PageRank to the advertisers. Because, Google now can detect standard banner sizes on websites/blogs and mark them as an advertisement. So those banners are as good as the ones that have “nofollow” tags.

Google’s head of webspam Matt Cutts says on his blog’s comments:

Matt Cutts said,

… my comment on the group said that we were already pretty good at handling banner ads, whether of the 125×125 variety or the more traditional 468×80 variety.

He has also talked about this in detail at Google Groups’ Webmaster Help section.

In addition to that, Google can also detect affiliate links as well. So those links are also sterilized and don’t have any effects on search engine results.

I have read somewhere that Google was also not happy about free WP themes. Because these free themes usually have a link in the footer section that links back to the theme designer’s website. This of course, passes PageRank and Google hates when that happens.

Google’s 3B (big brother behavior – i just made that up ;)

It’s very unfortunate that Google is resorting to this kind of behavior. Instead of chasing every webmaster and checking whether they sell ads or not, they should concentrate more on improving their algorithm. Because its competitors (e.g Yahoo, Microsoft, and others) are continually working on their algorithm and improving their search engine.

If Google wastes too much time on policing people to comply to its rules and regulations, and ignores improving its algorithm. Then one day, it might simply become just another search engine that was killed by its own product – PageRank.

What’s your opinion on this?

Sneak Peak to WordPress 2.3′s new WYSIWYG

I tested WordPress 2.3 today, it looked not much different than the previous version, as far as the user interface is concerned. However as the development team said, it’s more than a skin deep. Some of these skin deep features that are not visible to the eye in v2.3 are:

  • Full and complete Atom 1.0 support, including the publishing protocol.
  • New jQuery which is 800% faster.
  • Behind the user-facing tags system is a really great taxonomy system, which adds a ton of flexibility. It’s probably the biggest schema upgrade since version 1.5.
  • The importers have been revamped to be more memory efficient, and you can now add an importer through a plugin.
  • Through hooks and filters you can now override the update system, the dashboard RSS feeds, the feed parser, and tons more than you could in 2.2.
  • The new $wpdb->prepare() way of doing SQL queries.

New, more advanced WYSIWYG

But what you will notice most is the new, more advanced WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) feature for the post page. Here is the screenshot.

A closer look:

As you notice, there is a tag field under the post field too. Now you can add tags to your posts directly at the time of the posting. With tags, you can do your own tag clouds, categorization, and improve your search results within the blog. By adding specific keywords to the post, readers will be able to find them easily.

Should you upgrade now?

If you are using lots of plugins at the moment, then you should wait a while until your plugins are updated. But if you are not using that many plugins, it’s recommended that you upgrade now. I see that most of the plugins are already compatible with WP2.3.

As for me I will wait a bit, and probably update it when I redesign my blog. I do have plans to change the blog design before the year end. It all will depend on my schedule, if I will have more free time, it will be sooner than that.

By the way, you are welcome to share your thoughts and critiques on the current theme. Also please let me know what kind of theme you would like to see for the new version (i.e white background, liquid design…etc)?

WP Theme: GenkiTheme, with floating menus on the left

I stumbled upon Eric’s blog through a backlink in my WP dashboard. In his latest post, he was thinking whether to review my color picker to get a free PR7 backlink. Browsing his blog, I found out that he is giving away his blog theme for free. It’s called GenkiTheme, you can grab it here. It’s a clean-cut theme with a floating menu on the left. Nicely done WP theme.

Features

  • 3 columns: Fluid-Fixed-Fixed
  • Floating tabmenu on the left. Static when javascript is disabled.
  • Widget support
  • WP2.0-WP2.2 compatible
  • Tested on IE6/7 and Firefox2

You can preview it on his blog or at themes.wordpress.net.
