AdesClrPicker Stats (since it’s been freeware)

Two weeks ago (Sep 22, 08) I made my color picker software free and launched a new “product site” for it. So far, as of now, the software has been downloaded 543 times since it’s been freeware. (Total downloads to date: 15,680)

As for the product site, it’s showing very good results on Alexa stats – it’s up 11 million sites – with a current ranking of 349,873. That’s a lot of millions for a two-week old website to jump.

.

Traffic to the website now averages about 100 unique visitors daily. Most of the users being referred from StumbleUpon, my website, and my blog.

That’s the updates… Thanks to everyone who have emailed me with encouraging words! I appreciate it.

.
Thanks to Kevin Muldoon of BloggingTips.com and Adi Wong of RiceBlogger.com for their link loves! Actually it’s more than a link love, they have both provided full-fledged product reviews. Thanks guys!

Good News: AdesClrPicker is now FREE!

AdesClrPickerAs I mentioned last week I am currently working on a new Font Manager software, which will a freeware. I was also saying that I am thinking of making my color picker application freeware too.

Well, the time has come. AdesClrPicker is now officially a freeware!

You can download the latest version of AdesClrPicker v2.2 at the new product site at http://www.adesclrpicker.com. All the new updates and information related to this software will be on this website from now on.

Do spread the news to your readers on your blog, to your friends, and to anyone who would benefit from this cool application.

Don’t forget to bookmark the site on Delicious, Digg it, or Stumble it! Thanks in advance and enjoy the application!

How softwares are created, my font viewer software

I am working on a new software at the moment. It will be a font viewer/manager type of software (it will be free). Often times, I found myself downloading free fonts from the net, usually in a zipped format. Each zipped file containing hundreds of fonts in it. Unless you are a fonts expert, you wouldn’t know which font was good and worth installing on your machine. Having in mind that you already have hundreds of fonts on your PC.

I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t afford to install additional new fonts unless I make sure they will be of use to me.

So, this software will address first and foremost the above stated problem. With it you will be able to preview fonts in any folder, including your C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder. That means once you download a collection of fonts in one file, you can easily go through them and install only the ones that you like (software will have a “install this font” button beside each font).

You can type your own words in the text field provided and preview it with different fonts. You can change the color of the text, color of the background, bold, italic, font size etc.

Besides that, it will allow you to rate your fonts. For example if you wish to give some fonts in your C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder 5-star (the best fonts) and some fonts 1-Star (this font sucks, but i have to have it since i am using it for particular project)… then you can do so.

It will also allow you to make your own collection out of the fonts that you have, and put it in a zip file, or in an existing folder, or send them to Desktop.

Below is the interface that I have drawn and send it to my programmer.

font_viewer_thb.jpg

Currently it’s in its early development stage. I will post the first working version in a few weeks time so that you can check it out for yourself. Till then, if you have any other suggestions for the software please throw them to me (or just leave comment under this post). I will be glad to integrate it if they improve the usability of the software.

You would ask, why develop a software when there are already tons of other similar softwares out there? Well, I am sure there are other great tools out there that can do the same thing, but I just like to create a software that is according to my preference (the way I like it to be). And I am sure you wouldn’t mind to have a free software either, would you?

I will keep you guys updated on the development of this software.

P.S I am also thinking to make my color picker program free. So, stay tuned for the news!

AdesBlog readers, give me feedback

I have installed a feedback script on the blog (see orange feedback button on the left). Now all my ears are on you my readers, do let me know what you want to see on AdesBlog. Your suggestions don’t have to be related to the blog posts only, it can be anything. So, suggest anything that you think would be beneficial to the readers.

feedback_forum.png

With this script you can also vote on existing ideas that others had suggested. So if there is an idea that you find useful, you can vote for it.

As an admin, I can change the status of the ideas to: planned, accepted, started working on it…etc. This way you know the progress of your idea.

Put it on your blog

If you want to put this script on your blog just go to my feedback page, and click on “Want your own UserVoice Page?” link. Or you can just go to http://www.uservoice.com and sign up.

P.S saw this script first on LiewCF.

Don’t be discouraged by the numbers

Human beings (accept for the prophets, i will tell you the story after the post) are affected by the results of our actions, I guess that’s our nature. If we relate it to blogosphere, it’s all about traffic, RSS subscribers, number of comments blog posts etc. Bloggers get happy when their blogs’ traffic increase, when their comments on the posts increase and their RSS subscribers increase… etc.

And opposite is true, when the traffic decreases, the number of comments decreases and RSS subscribers drop, bloggers get upset and demoralized. Eventually they may even abandon their blogging because of the declining stats.

My advice is “don’t bother about the numbers!”. (Yes, I know it’s easier said than done but…) Just do what you have to do (i.e blogging) and keep blogging, don’t bother about those stats. Because if you are good at what you do, you will eventually succeed.

I guess in order not to be bothered much about the stats, you need to overcome a certain barrier. In my view this barrier consists of thoughts like: I have too few readers. My traffic is too low for me to succeed in blogging. What will people say if i write in certain manner? I have to write/behave/attend conferences like “top bloggers” to be accepted by others…etc

Reason for the discouragement

Usually one of the main reasons for the discouragement is, it’s when you blog for the wrong reasons. People blog for various reasons, and if you blog for specific reason like “making money online” only. Then, there is a high probability that you will stop blogging when you hit the bottom. In other words, when your blog stops making money, you won’t see any reason to continue blogging.

Of course, it depends on the projects. Sometimes you launch a project just to make money. So, when the project doesn’t make money, it’s better to just discontinue the project.

High traffic doesn’t mean more comments

I just want to give an example that high traffic doesn’t always mean more comments on every post. For example, ReadWriteWeb is a huge blog that has more than 200 thousand RSS subscribers (see screenshot).

rww.gif

But look how many comments each blog-post gets on RWW (see screenshot below). Not many! So if you have few hundred or few thousand RSS subscribers, and do not get much comments – don’t sweat!

rww_comments.gif

So, if RWW with its 200+ thousand RSS subscribers, on average getting less than 10 comments per post, then by right your posts shouldn’t get any comments at all! ;) Just kidding. But you got the point right!? Don’t be worried if your posts are not getting any comments.

The Story

So, back to the story that I promised in the beginning of this post. Prophets are not bothered by the results, nor by the number of their followers (no matter how numerous or how few the number of their followers are), neither by the effectiveness of their calling. They have just one task to do – and that is to convey the message. Nothing more. Because it’s in Allah’s (The God) hands who should be guided and who shouldn’t be.

For example, prophet Hud (Eber in Hebrew) peace be upon him, preached years and years to his people. However, the only response he got was the rejection from his people (most of the prophets including Isa (Jesus) peace be upon him was rejected by his own people).

After years has passed, the people of Hud even demanded saying:

They said, “Have you come in order to turn us away from our gods? Then bring upon us the calamity with which you threaten us, if you are telling the truth!Quran 46.22

You see? prophet of Allah didn’t get discouraged by the response of his people. Instead he was patient and continued his calling to the Truth. But it was his people who grew inpatient and demanded that the punishment be brought upon them. So God punished them as they wished.

Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him) had also said that, there will be a prophet on the Judgment Day with 10 followers, and there will be a prophet with five followers, and 3, and 2, and 1. And there would be a prophet with no follower whatsoever!

Can you imagine a prophet who has been calling people to the Truth all of his life and didn’t get any result? We get discouraged if our blog’s traffic drops, or get negative comments or if few people unsubscribe from our RSS… and most of us even give up if particular thing that we are doing doesn’t bear any results within a short period of time.

In worldly terms, these prophets with few or no followers would be defined as the losers. But Allah has called them in the Quran that they were the real victorious ones. And the real losers were the community who rejected these prophets. Because ultimately it’s the prophets who will be in the highest level of Paradise, and the people who rejected them will be in the depths of Hellfire.

In Conclusion

So, the moral of the story (and this post) is: So what if you lost few RSS subscribers, of if your traffic declined?! Don’t bother about these little things. As long as you love what you are doing, just continue doing. Don’t bother what people will think of you or what will they say..etc. You are better than that!

P.S Remember, majority is not always correct! And you do not have to fit in to majority’s demands, lifestyle, thinking…etc in order to be successful.

Note: Don’t get it wrong. It doesn’t mean that you do not bother about marketing, SEO, frequency of your posts, consistency of your posts…etc. Instead, you must use all the available options and ways to make your blog successful. It just means that, when you see negative results, you shouldn’t be bothered by them. Just keep doing what you are doing! And you will be fine.

Miniposts on AdesBlog.com

For those who read AdesBlog.com through RSS Readers: a while back I have introduced miniblog on AdesBlog. It is located on the homepage just below navigation menu (see screenshot). These are posts that are usually short (i.e not more than 3-4 lines), they could be updates from AdesBlog, links to various websites that might be useful to you but do not need a full review in the blog.

miniposts.png

Mini posts are not published in RSS, mainly because I do not want to fill my RSS with short posts. So, if you do not want to miss these posts, check back adesblog/miniblog once in a while. Because you might miss something that could be really really useful for you… ;)

Future of Web Design Industry?

I have been in web design business for 6 years now. Over the years many things has changed. Some of the major changes in the industry include:

  1. putting behind the 90′s designs that had a lot of colorful and flashing texts (thank God for that!)
  2. putting behind the flash frenzy and choosing usability over fully-flash based websites (flash websites are now used for certain type of websites only i.e portfolio, restaurant..etc). Remember how every website on the net was a flash website few years back? Even the corporate sites were using fully-flash websites then.
  3. shift from HTML based websites to CSS based websites, thanks to softwares like Dreamweaver that makes this transformation easer. And to organizations like W3C for pushing for the implementation of these new, better standards.

However the transformation is still not 100%, most of the sites now limit CSS usage to text styling only. I guess that’s because of the difficulty in CSS design, because CSS is more like a programming than web design to many web designers — who got used to WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) way of doing things like in photoshop.

  4. and now, shift from static websites to CMS based websites, thanks to CMS systems (including wordpress) that make it easy to build such database driven websites. Good thing about these systems are almost all of them are free.

How does it affect Web Design Industry?

So far, the effect on the web design industry has been only positive. When the flash was introduced by Macromedia and got a huge popularity by everyone. It affected web designers in a positive way. Because now web designers were able to charge a lot higher for their works. (As you know flash websites cost more than double of what normal HTML sites cost).

Similarly, now that the blogging is a huge hit, it too brought a huge opportunity for web designers. Because, blog and design goes hand in hand. Due to huge demand for blog designs, many web designers now have turned into pure “blog designers”. I personally find it easier designing a blog than designing a website. That’s because blogs will usually have the same pre-defined sections (i.e categories, archive, blogroll…etc) most of the time.

Future of Web Design

Few years back I thought in the near future (i.e now) web-design industry will be made irrelevant by big players like Microsoft and others who are interested in internet technologies, who I thought will make it easy for anybody to design a website. I thought people would be able to design websites just by dragging and dropping.

But now, after a decade, web design industry is more relevant than ever. Was I wrong in my prediction or is it just not time yet? We see that there is already some transition from custom web-design to using ready-made templates. But that transition doesn’t really affect web design industry, because, those templates still have to be customized by web-designers for the people who have purchased them. So, they will still be referring back to some freelance web-designers or web design companies to customize their templates.

And even if in the event that there will be some drag and drop technology to create websites in the future. I am sure not everyone will want to use them. Because businesses want to be unique i.e they don’t want to have the same website like their competitor.

Conclusion

I think the web design industry will stay as long as the current HTTP based internet technology stays. Because the current internet technology needs websites to be run in the way they are running now i.e through hyperlinks, and that require web designing. So, unless some other “new internet technology” replaces the current one, which will change the way we interact (maybe we won’t need websites anymore in the future, who knows) the web design industry is here to stay.

Benefits of listing your software at Download.com

acp_download.pngCNET’s Download.com is one of the most popular sites for downloading softwares. If you are a software developer, I strongly recommend listing your site on Download.com for the following reasons:

Firstly, from my own experience (listing my color picker) I noticed that this is a great way to reach wider audience. Because your software not only appears on Download.com but on their whole network of sites (see AdesClrPicker on ZDNet.com, ZDNet Australia, TechRepublic, The New York Times, CNET Asia, CNET UK…etc) over 20 sites.

Getting your software on Download.com is already great, but getting it on more than 20 popular sites is even better.

Secondly, listing your software on Download.com can save you bandwidth, especially if your software is big in size or if the download traffic is too high. Download.com can host your software on their server for unlimited amount of downloads.

It’s also the trusted source of download for your customers, unlike many free file hosting services that could hurt your reputation.

Thirdly, I see that other smaller download sites see Download.com as their source for new softwares and software updates. So, getting your software on Download.com means — getting your software on hundreds of other smaller sites for free.

How much it costs? Is it worth the money?

Uploading your software to Download.com is done through its other site Upload.com. They have two different listing packages; one costs $9/month and another $99/month (see details).

I took $9/month package, with what I have listed above I would say it totally worths the price!

P.S Consider listing your software on Snapfiles.com and Tucows.com too.

AdesClrPicker v2.2 is out!

I have been working on the new version of my color picker software – AdesClrPicker. The new v2.2 version is out now, you can download it here.

For those who are not familiar with AdesClrPicker, it’s a software for picking colors from anywhere on your screen. With one click you can get the color code of that spot in 5 different codes (HTML, RGB, Delphi, C++ and VB). For example if you click on a white space on your Desktop, it would give you #FFFFFF (it will be copied to your clipboard). Setting up your AdSense ads will be very easy with this program ;)

New features in this version

Floating Panel

Floating Panel (see image to the left) has been redesigned to include most used functions of the program. Previously it used to show the last 10 captured colors only. Now it has a lot more useful features on it. Floating Panel just sits on your screen, on top of all your windows. It’s small in dimension, so it can easily be positioned in any corner of your screen. If you do not want, you can always minimize it to taskbar.

Export Captured Colors as Image

New export feature has been added. Now you can export your captured colors as an image (jpg, gif or png) as well, in addition to Adobe Photoshop table export feature that it has. Exported images will have a colored box + color code. These images are useful if you want to share your colors with others. Instead of sending just the color codes, now people can actually send the colors together with the color codes.

This is how the exported image will look like (image + color code):

Change Preview Pane Size & Zoom Level

I have also added a new feature that allows you to change the preview pane and its zoom level. Some people suggested that they want to have a bigger zoom level. With new version that will be possible!

As you can see, a lot new exciting features are added to the new version. But it’s still small in size, only 1.5MB.

Promotion: Get 50% Discount

The program costs $9.99, but I am giving 50% off to all AdesBlog readers. Just use the following coupon-code on checkout page ACP-4CJB-BLOG and you will get $5.00 discount. Expiry date for this coupon is 20th May 2008 (another 7 days).

Personal Theory: WordPress will be a full fledged CMS

wpcms.png Don’t you agree with me? I think WP is moving towards that direction now. In the very near future, I am positive that it will become full fledged CMS (content management system) instead of being just a blogging platform.

With its open source and open platform nature, it will be so much easier to setup a website (for anybody) then. Just like now, there will be tons of plugins that would be built for standard website requirements (i.e payment gateways, statistical tools, newsletter integration, photo gallery.. etc).

I hope that WP 3.0 version will move in that direction.

This might be the only reason why you should start using Twitter

My friend Nurbek pointed me to this news, which I thought was pretty amazing.

twitter_adv.png

———–
So if you are not already using Twitter, make sure you register today ;) Because you never know in what (emergency) situation you might find yourself in, especially when you are overseas.

As you know Twitter supports SMS updates from your mobile phone internationally. After you have registered, don’t forget to verify your mobile number. Also don’t forget to add your Twitter account to your mobile’s addressbook (for easy SMS). An of course, you should inform your friends about your Twitter account. Otherwise, rescue mission might take considerable time ;)

Keep an eye on my twitter from time to time too ;) Especially when my blog goes un-updated for a long time. (God forbid).

Personal Theory: Top bloggers don’t read other blogs

I have this feeling that top bloggers do not really follow other blogs. I think they are too busy to read other blogs (probably busy with their own blogs or working on other projects). And even if they followed, I presumed that there must be only a handful of blogs that they really followed on daily basis.

In order to test whether my theory was true, I twittered some of the top bloggers and had two of them respond. One was Jeremy Schoemaker of Shoemoney.com and the other was Michael Arrington of TechCrunch.com Below is their replies to my question “How many blogs do you read daily?”.

techcrunch.png

shoemoney.png

I also sent one line question through email to few top-bloggers and two of them responded. One was Yaro Starak of www.entrepreneurs-journey.com, and the other was Darren Rowse of www.problogger.net

Yaro Starak said: Usually zero, but every few days I’ll spend some time checking about 5-10 of the leaders in my industry.

Just after I was starting to think that my theory was in fact true, I received an email from Darren.

Darren Rowse said: I track around 700 blogs – however I don’t read them all (I scan) and I wouldn’t do that on a daily basis. For me there are probably 50 or so that are on my daily read list but the rest would be weekly.

So, again it’s a tie. Not really a tie, but there are people on both sides. But if we were to follow the rules of statistics and make a statement on the poll results. It would read something like this:

Seventy five percent of top-bloggers either followed no blogs or followed less than 10 blogs daily.

Lesson to be learned from this

If you spend your day reading blogs (tens of them) and do not really do much other than reading blogs (like working on your own blog, working on your personal web projects..etc) then you might want to re-evaluate your reading habits.

Because these top-bloggers are successful not because they read tons of other blogs, but because they know what to concentrate on, how to prioritize their daily tasks, and most importantly they know how NOT to waste their time reading so many blogs daily.

Because, at the end of the day, if you do not take action (i.e do something: launch a new niche blog, work on a web project, or make a new software… etc), reading hundreds of blogs daily won’t make you successful. The difference here is “reading only and doing nothing” vs “reading important things from selective blogs, learning from them, and then making use of this newly acquired knowledge – applying them on your personal projects“.

Your say…

Now, let me listen what you have to say about this theory. Do you think top bloggers read many blogs? And what should be a healthy dose of reading blogs daily? Do you think reading too many blogs will affect your own productivity negatively? Look forward to your comments.
