My New Project - Malaysian Island Review

malaysian island reviewThis is my new project MalaysianIslandReview.com. Idea for the project came when I was browsing the net for reviews of local islands prior to my trip to Redang Island.

The site will provide reviews of every island in Malaysia. The reviews will be written by those who have visited the island. The goal of the site is to provide as many reviews as possible to the user so that he/she can make an objective decision for his/her trip.

Plugin Used

I am using WPReviewSite for the rating management for this site. It’s a great plugin for setting up such websites. But the plugin has one huge drawback and that is - you can only create one set of rating criteria. That means if I setup rating criteria for the islands (water purity, beach quality etc), I cannot setup another set of criteria for the hotels for example (room quality, price etc). And that is a big drawback, because most of the sites won’t be only about one thing, they will have sub-categories that will need different rating criteria. Just wanted to point that out in case you are going to invest $97 for this plugin and expect to have additional rating criteria.

Request

I am sure the local readers of my blog have visited many islands in Malaysia. I would like to ask them to rate and write a review on MIR. Also please let your friends know about the site too. Thanks in advance.

For the people of other countries who haven’t visited Malaysia but would like to one day, don’t forget to check back MIR before your holiday!

Redang Island Trip

I am newly back from my trip to Redang Island. I had a great time. Away from everything: computers, internet, traffic jams… - just the sun, sea, beach and a great time with my wife and two kids.

Luckily the weather was good too, only the last day it started raining heavily. We stayed there for 3 nights and 4 days.

Below is a front view of the resort we stayed, it’s called Laguna Redang Island Resort.

Redang Island has one of the clearest waters in Malaysia. Read more »

Connecting Hard Disk to TV

CDs are great for writing digital media but they get scratched very easily, especially when you have kids that are 3.5 years old and 1 year old in one team ;)

So I said to myself I should get one of those “harddisk encapsulators” that can hook up your harddisk to a TV and make it a media player. After doing some research on hdd players on the net I decided to buy Popcorn Hour A-110. However when I went to local IT Mall “Low Yat” there was no “popcorn” brand whatsoever. When I asked the sales assistants whether they had this “popcorn hour” player, they simply smiled and didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. I am sure they thought I was kidding, asking for real popcorn…

wd_tv.pngAfter going from one shop to the other, it was clear that most of the shops had only two brands for 3.5″ harddisk encapsulators, they were GigaView by Noontec and WD TV by Western Digital.

GigaView 3.5” HDD Media Player

GigaView was priced at $70 and WD TV was $100. Also for GigaView you can put the harddisk inside the media player, as for WD TD you have to connect the harddisk via USB cable - that means your harddisk would be lying around the TV cabinet. So I said “I will buy GigaView, it’s cheaper and I can put the harddisk inside it”.

How was I wrong! It was a nightmare product! I came back and put up everything - connected to TV and played a sample movie file. At first it was taking too long to detect the harddisk (hdd was brand new btw), I said I am sure it will be faster next time, it’s just for the first time I said to myself. Then it finally detected the harddisk but now it would only play the files for 5 minutes and then get stuck. So I formatted the harddisk and changed it from NTFS to FAT32 file system, this solved the 5 minutes issue, but now it was flickering every 10-15 minutes and jumping the frames… After few hours, it wasn’t even recognizing the file names and was showing some scrambled characters instead. Now it wouldn’t play completely.

After that I didn’t bother to touch the player, I just put it back in the box and the next day took it to the shop back. I told them that I want my money back or to change it to different brand. They said they could only change it to same brand but different unit. I said I don’t want the same brand. Because after checking online it was clear that the problem was not with specific units but with the whole product of the company. So I got my way and got it changed to WD TV by Western Digital. I paid extra $30 bucks plus $4 for changing to different brand. The guy wanted the $4 to be paid in cash specifically so I asked him whether it was going to his pocket ;) he said “no” and gave me some unconvincing reasons. Anyway, I was happy that I could get it changed to WD TV now.

WD TV 3.5” HDD Media Player

WD TV was great, came back put it up everything and pressed ‘on’. It showed everything instantly, it could detect the harddisk and its different partitions, different folders.. etc. Compared to GigaView, the difference was like the earth and the sky.

This post is already long, so I won’t be talking about WD TV here. You can see a detailed review of this product at Geek.com here. But so far, I am very satisfied with WD TV, and the issue of harddisk being outside the media player became a “no issue” anymore ;)

Creative Ad: Fitness First

Would you sit on this FitnessFirst bus-stop? I wouldn’t… because once you sit on the bench it automatically shows your weight on the big screen to everyone to see! Creative huh?

I wouldn’t sit on this bus-stop because I am on the heavy side at the moment… I even bought a treadmill last year but somehow haven’t used it yet :) but I made a promise to myself that I will exercise soon (even bought a sauna suit last week). Will let you know on my progress in the future.

MBA in the pocket

mba_done.pngYesterday I had my last final exam and with that inshallah I am officially done with my MBA. Now I just have to wait for the results, which hopefully will come out fine. And then the convocation will be sometime in August.

I did my MBA at Management Centre at International Islamic University Malaysia, majoring in Strategic Management.

So was it beneficial? (that’s too obvious question) So, was it really really beneficial? (aha! that’s the right question) I guess I would only know whether it was really really beneficial when I apply the acquired knowledge in the corporate world or in my own company setting. But since I don’t have my own company (yet) and neither am I working for any organization (yet). Till then I will just stick to the first question and say “yes, it was beneficial”.

Now just wait until I do some Sun Tzu stuff on my blog ;)

AdesClrPicker v2.2.1 released

AdesClrPicker v2.2.1 is released. For those who do not know, it’s my software - which is freeware - for picking color codes from anywhere on your screen.
.

.
This version fixes few bugs, one of which was the shutdown problem. When the color picker was active, if the user wanted to shut down the PC, he/she couldn’t do it until he/she manually closes the color picker first. This was due to the floating menu being on top of all the windows and resistant to any command.
.
Now, this bug has been fixed, when the user issues a shut-down command, it will comply. Few other minor issues have been fixed as well. To download the latest version click here.

Predictions are just that - “predictions”…

About a decade ago when I was doing my degree in the University, in my management class I clearly remember that the book (I forgot the publisher of the book, but it was pretty standard book, maybe McGraw Hill on Management) was forecasting about the auto-makers of the world. And the book was suggesting that auto industry would consolidate and only few major auto-makers would dominate the world’s auto production. The rest would die of slowly.

And, in the top three spot they were all Western companies (no Asian automaker was in the list), I do not remember the third one but GM and Ford were in the list. But today after 10 years, we see a different picture…

auto_bailout.png
.
Today, US auto makers which were predicted to dominate the world’s auto industry are struggling to stay alive. US Congress is yet to decide on the fate of the three automakers, whether to bail them out or to let them bankrupt. The companies were seeking $14 billion from the financial industry bailout for emergency loans, but the bill was rejected in the Congress. Now the fate of the US automakers solely depend on the White House’s next move.

Regarding Asian automakers, we all know that Toyota had passed Ford Motor Co. as the world’s No. 2 automaker in 2003. And it officially took over General Motors as the world’s No.1 automaker in 2007. While Honda is not far behind on the fifth place (see below).

top_autos.png

This shows that the prediction was wrong on two counts; one, GM and Ford would be one of the strongest automakers (i.e financially stable). Two, no Asian automakers would be in the Top 3.

It also shows that nothing can be predicted precisely. And you can’t be 100% sure about the future events that are going to take place. I think this is best explained with the whole Credit Crunch crisis that we are now seeing worldwide. It’s really ironic that, after governments of countries worldwide spent millions of dollars on establishing all kinds of economic forecasting and risk management institutions, none of them had detected the Credit Crunch crisis and had an alternative solution in place for it. No one had a clue that the crisis would hit this soon, this quickly and this hard. How come?! So, much for the advancements in forecasting and crisis prevention!

So what was the point of spending all those money in establishing all those institutions, and employing all those professionals for years?

When will the Hour be established?

The following post has nothing to do with making money online. However, it might help you to make few (or a lot of) afterlife-money (i.e good deeds) depending on how you use it.

Picture below is an aerial view of Dubai City. As you can see the buildings are literally above the clouds. Just a few hundred years ago, Dubai and the whole of Arabian peninsula was just a desert. During that time, all you see was some mud houses, bedouins and camels. But now… this!

dubai_clouds.png

When I saw it I couldn’t help but remember the prophecy of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was asked a question by angel Jibril (Gabriel): “When will the Hour be established?”, in other words when is the Judgment Day.

Prophet said:“… When the shepherds of black camels start boasting and competing with others in the construction of higher buildings. And the Hour is one of five things which nobody knows except Allah.” (Volume 1, Book 2, Hadith No:47) Subhanallah, what a vivid description of the above picture by the prophet.

This was prophesied more than 1,400 years ago. And it’s just one of many prophecies of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) regarding the coming of the Last Day, including the Second Coming of Prophet Isa (Jesus).

So, my friends… the Hour is indeed near!

I am back on Twitter

backtotwitter.pngI am back on twitter. My new twitter account is at http://twitter.com/ades, do follow me!

I won’t be using auto-post wp plugin this time ;) Learned my lesson.

But I think it takes more than just publishing one blog post to educate twitter users about what constitutes to spam on twitter-network. Because not everyone follows Twitter’s blog!

Twitter team should have at least posted some “web2.0-style-bubble” notice on individual accounts informing them about upcoming actions that Twitter is going to take in order to fight spam. And that, users should avoid using auto-post plugins (which post blog’s posts automatically as they are published on the blog) into their twitter accounts. Who knew such plugins were considered spam?

Anyway… here is the new url twitter.com/ades
