Adobe bundles Macromedia products

Adobe started bundling Macromedia products in their suites, for example their latest Adobe® Web Bundle includes Adobe Creative Suite Premium and Macromedia Studio 8 in it. Adobe has acquired Macromedia earlier and this is the first sign of merging their tools together, I don’t know what they will do with the duplicate products like Adobe GoLive® CS2 and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Because soon or later they have to drop one or merge them into one.

100 Dollar Laptop

United Nations Secretary-General, Koffi Annan, and the prestigious Nicholas Negroponte have launched in Tunis the 100 dollar laptop, which aims at bringing over the new Information Technologies to the children in the least ‘developed’ countries in the world. Google has taken part in the creation of this little green laptop by developing a ‘thin client’, an essential device for a PC that doesn’t have nor a great memory or a processor. Thanks to this ‘client’, the laptops (which work with Linux) will have access to powerful softwares run by a central server while connected to the Internet. The objective is to produce several millions of these laptops, which will be delivered in schools in different countries from next year on. via google-blog.dirson.com/post.new/0303/

Banks Shifting Logins to Non-SSL Pages

After years of training customers to trust only SSL-enabled sites, banks are shifting their online banking logins to the unencrypted home pages of their websites. Although the data is encrypted once the user hits the “Sign In” button, the practice runs counter to years of customer conditioning, as well as the goals of the browser makers. Three of the five largest U.S. banks now display login forms on non-SSL home pages, including Bank of America, Wachovia and Chase, as well as financial services giant American Express.

Web sites are generally reluctant to use “https” on busy home pages, since SSL involves a tradeoff: improved security, but slower response time. Consumers, meanwhile, prefer easy to-remember URLs for their online banking. In placing login screens on non-SSL home pages, banks are trying to have it both ways: fast page loading without the SSL-related performance hit. The login form’s “action” URL points to an SSL-enabled https URL. read full article

$50 laptop sale sets off violent stampede

RICHMOND, Va. - A rush to purchase $50 used laptops turned into a violent stampede Tuesday, with people getting thrown to the pavement, beaten with a folding chair and nearly driven over. One woman went so far as to wet herself rather than surrender her place in line.

People threw themselves forward, screaming and pushing each other. A little girl’s stroller was crushed in the stampede. Witnesses said an elderly man was thrown to the pavement, and someone in a car tried to drive his way through the crowd. via msnbc

Adobe to acquire Macromedia

Adobe LogoAdobe Systems Incorporated has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. It took many designers including myself by surprise. I don’t know what will happen to two very distinct product families under one roof after this. Adobe with Photoshop in one hand and Flash with Dreamweaver on the other.
