The Helvetica font has turned 50 years old today. Helvetica was created by Miedinger with E.Hoffmann in Switzerland. Originally called Neue Haas Grotesk, the typeface’s name was changed by Haas’ German parent company Stempel in 1960 to Helvetica — derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland — in order to make it more marketable internationally. Helvetica is now among the most widely used sans-serif typefaces internationally.

DesignerInAction has a nice collection of free fonts for Web Designers. Their collection is not a lot like other sites (some sites have too many fonts until you do not know which one to download) but they have the nice fonts that web designers really need. Though the site is in German, it should not be an obstacle to browse the fonts section.
UrbanFonts.com is a great new free font archive but with a twist…. It’s organized as a commercial font foundry with plenty of interactive features. The site carries over 8,000 free fonts and dingbats for PC and MAC without annoying pop up ads or obtrusive advertisement. Fonts and dingbats are neatly categorized with large custom color previews. The site also has a blog, a forum, and an articles section where you can read about fonts and typography. It’s neatly packages in a web 2.0 style with tags to find the top searched fonts.
