Firefox Plugin: Gmail Multi-Account Switcher

gmail_switcher.pngTo continue where we left off…

You might not have multiple twitter accounts, that’s understandable, but I am sure you have many gmail accounts? Well, I do… I have couple of gmail accounts, usually different accounts for different projects.

So, if you are like me, have to check different gmail accounts all the time, you know that logging out from one account and logging in to another account can be a hassle. Especially if you check your accounts frequently.

To solve this problem, you can use Gmail Manager add-on for Firefox. As you can see from the screenshot, in order to switch from one gmail account to another, you just have to right click on the gmail icon in the firefox taskbar, and choose your particular account to login. That’s it, you will automatically will be logged to your chosen gmail account.

This plugin allows you to use secure connection for your accounts. Also, since it has the option to store passwords, it’s highly recommended that you do not use this at the public PCs where other people can access your emails.

Google Gears doesn’t recognize Google.com

google_gears.pngIsn’t it strange that Google’s own product Google Gears does not recognize the URL google.com? [see pic] Probably they are not doing exceptions to their own domains, but come on who would complain?

Google Gears is a plug-in that extends your browser to create a richer platform for web applications. For example with it, you can use Google Docs and Google Reader offline when your PC is not connected to the internet. When it is connected, it would synchronize the offline data with online applications.

Additionally, Zoho and Remember the Milk too use Google Gears.

Firefox Plugin: Hyperwords

Hyperwords is a great plugin for firefox. You can do with it many stuff. But what I liked most about it was the translate feature that translates pages on the fly – without opening a new window, right there on the same page.

hyperwords.png

For example, below is a news page in Russian. I have selected the paragraph and translated it into English. As you can see other parts of the website is still in Russian, and only the selected paragraph has been translated. Cool huh?

Here is a YouTube video of what more you can do with this plugin.

Firefox Plugin: To-do & Reminder Manager

firefox_todo.jpgIf you are like me who spend lots of hours on firefox, then you will find this plugin ReminderFox 1.7 very useful. It’s a to-do (and reminder) manager. It sits silently at the status bar of your firefox and lets you know of the latest to-do’s and reminders that you have set before.

When you mouse over on the status bar it will show you your reminders for today, upcoming ones + your to-do lists (see screenshot). You can also chose to be reminded through small pop-up windows if you wish.

Personally, liked the plugin very much…

Firefox: changing opacity-level of the image on the fly

If you are viewing this post in Firefox, then you will be able to see variations of the same picture of me (above) with different opacity levels (visibility levels). For the first picture, opacity level is set to 0.1, and for the second 0.3, then 0.5, 0.7 and finally to 1. This is a great feature in Firefox where you can change the opacity of any image on the fly, just by inserting style=”-moz-opacity:0.5″ in any image code (IMG src).

Example: <img src="photo.jpg" style="-moz-opacity:0.7" />

You can change the opacity level from 0.7 to any number between 0 (totally not visible) to 1 (fully visible). Choose anything in between from 0.1 to 0.9 for displaying the image in partial visibility.

How about MouseOver effect?

That is possible too… mouse over to the picture (left) to see what I mean. This effect can also be done on the fly, by adding additional code to the IMG code of any image. Code to be added is onMouseover="this.style.MozOpacity=1" onMouseout="this.style.MozOpacity=0.6". Again, you can set any number between 0 to 1. In this code 1 is the mouse over opacity level of the image and 0.6 is the mouse-out opacity level (when you remove your mouse from the image).

Example: <IMG style="-moz-opacity:0.6" src="photo.jpg" onMouseover="this.style.MozOpacity=1" onMouseout="this.style.MozOpacity=0.6">

So, in this code above, there are three opacity levels:

  1. For the initial state
  2. Mouse-over state
  3. Mouse-out state

Usage Suggestion

You can use this effect on some ads, banners, and images where you do not want your readers to be distracted by them. Using this effect will still allow them to view the images in 100% opacity by just mouse-overing on them.

Too bad it does not work on other browsers. There are many cross-browser javascripts for doing these kind of effects. But usually they require you some sort of installation (uploading additional css, js files..etc). But this one doesn’t! And that is the best thing about it.

Firefox add-on: FTP client in your browser

FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers right inside your browser.

If you are too lazy to open your ftp client, then this add-on is created for you.

FireFTP Charity Project
The website has a charity project where if you donate, half of your donations will go to orphans in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

The author himself has adopted one kid from the orphanage. What a wonderful person he is.
He says:“This year my family and I have been able to adopt one of the children from the orphanage. (He’s the cute little kid in the photo to the right.)” They very much look alike, aren’t they?

Let me make my contribution…

FireFox Plugin: PermaTabs

Have you accidentally lost any data by closing the Firefox tab? If yes, then most probably you are not using PermaTabs plugin.

After you have installed PermaTabs, right-clicking on any tab in Firefox and choosing “Permanent Tab” from the menu will disable the close button for that particular tab. This will make that tab impossible to be closed, unless of course you un-PermaTab it ;) It’s particularly useful for Email tabs.

I am sure most of you knew about this plugin, but it might be new to some readers.

FasterFox – Increase your Firefox speed

“Prefetching” is the silent loading of links in the background before you click them. This speeds up browsing because in many cases, by the time you click a link it is already cached on your machine and there is zero load time needed.

By default, Firefox prefetches links which are explicitly marked by the web page designer to be prefetched. This is seldom done in practice, so you rarely benefit from it.

Fasterfox’s “Enhanced Prefetching” causes all of the links on the page to be eligible for prefetching, which leads to a very noticeable difference in snappiness while surfing the web. Download it at http://fasterfox.mozdev.org
