Facebook launches “Places”

places.pngFacebook launched Places, an extension to its iPhone application where people can post their location via Places to their Wall on FB. You can also tag your friends who are with you in the same place. Another feature of Places is, you can find friends who are nearby you. Seems like going to be interesting. Unfortunately it’s only available in US at the moment, in Malaysia you only see this blank screen to the right.

Places will directly compete with foursquare, another most popular location tagging application at the moment. Foursquare is not easy to beat though, since it has a competitive advantage; people can use foursqare to get discounts in restaurants, boutiques, shops etc, users also receive funny badges and become a mayor of the places…

It’s going to be interesting in the next few months, how these two apps will be competing with each other.

  1. It sounds like facebook is taking yet another step towards being a huge invasion of privacy. Now instead of just telling other people where you are, you can also tell everyone where your friends are. Sounds like the perfect app for the high-tech burglar.

  2. Everything is done for iPhones, but I believe my Nokia 5800 is just as good, would like to have more and more apps to it also.

  3. Scott says:

Isn’t strange that it looks like the pointer on the Places logo is pointing at the number 4 which happens to be in a square?

  5. Another improvement from facebook. This gonna be a threat to google map.

@Laptop sure you are right… but it is the user’s who choose to take action and use these features, so can you blame facebook? I say not… I say it’s the people use them… I mean after all facebook is not forcing anyone to reveal their information. Can’t really blame facebook for privacy issues in my opinion.

    Till then,

    Jean

  8. Another attempt of facebook to have a piece of google’s pie.

  9. Giorgi says:

This information was new for me. That is interesting and cool.

I got a question when will it be accessible in other countries.
When you can find your friend near you by chance that’s cool :D

so are they going to add another countries? and if yes, when?

  10. I think Places is going to do better than Foursquare, because the Places is going to ride on the back of Facebook which is very popular all over the world. I hope Places is going to be available over the world soon.

    I Love Facebook!

  13. Sometimes there is such a thing as being too plugged in. This just adds a new element of concern for parents out there who’s teens and pre-teens use Facebook on a regular basis. Do you really want people to know where your teenager is located?

  14. I agree with the first comment that it’s not very wise to let people be aware that you’re not home via these applications. It’s more appropriate to provide a digital update when you’re leaving a location than when you arrive there. This will keep the digital burglars guessing.

  15. Soon facebook will be competing with google for similar features

  16. HarakahDaily says:

I think they will take over Foursquare soon since everyone today got FB

  17. it is a cool feature as it allows to keep tabs on what your friends are up to, however there is a danger of privacy issues when people do not know how to turn of the gps feature

  18. Ohh..I never even thought about that. Thanks for sharing so valuable info. Google places -> now Facebook places. These guys know how to monetize traffic.

  19. I am not a big fan of this application. It seems a little creepy and like a great tool for stalkers.

  24. Catalin says:

Don’t really think they’re trying to outrun Foursquare, but running their own version is definitely going to make the FB users happy.

  25. I think with the infrastructure and clout Facebook have, Four Square could be facing some stiff competition. Hopefully, both services step up their game rather than one of them bowing out.

  26. rosario says:

I think, facebook is not forcing anyone to reveal their information ;)

  27. I’m a little over facebook these days, this is a cool development; just not for me.

  28. Rhia says:

As the first response indicates, and wittily at that may i add, this is a clear intrusion of privacy and is really way too much information for me…

Got something to say? Go for it!
