Google went too far with Pac-Man Game?

pacman_google.jpg

Personally, it was very disturbing to use Google with Pac-Man sound constantly looping at the background. If you don’t know what I am talking about go to google.com now and see (before it expires).

I think Google’s Doodle Team went too far this time. Should have just sticked to graphic logos and not games.

Btw, Google TV is launched at this week’s I/O Conference. TechCrunch has the details here. What is Google TV for bloggers? Well, it’s another channel for you to reach out to wider audience with your ads, probably your ads can be seen on TV in the near future. And for vbloggers (video bloggers) it probably means more money since people can watch their videos on TV. More banner impressions == more money.

Update: now you can see this page at http://www.google.com/pacman/ anytime.

    I love you pacman&google :D

    Can play two -W,A,S,D

  3. I don’t think Google went too far with pacman, but then again I didn’t have speakers turned on to be annoyed by looping music. My girlfriend loved being able to play pacman right on google’s homepage. It sure beats all of their previous themed logos anyway.

  4. I think it was kinda cool, although it did distract me for quite a bit of time at work. It did help the day go by, so I really can’t complain other than it allowing the little kid in me to come out.

  5. No way Ades, I loved the Google Pacman! Sure it was a bit of a distraction from work, but people need a bit of time for playing around. :)

  6. titan says:

yap. i also love pacman. :)

  7. Yeah… Pacman… I remember the days :)

  8. Murlu says:

It was fun for a while but then the sound did kind of kill it.

I’m sure the productivity of work really slumped while it was up haha.

  9. It was only for one day and it wasn’t so disturbing additionally it was a reminder of 80s and 90s. Yes I am too a pacman fan :)

  10. The pacman doodle was a first for Google, and it really brought back a flood of nostalgia in my case. It wasn’t very challenging though, and I only lost my first man on 44,000 and then only because I was getting bored and was not paying attention. The widening of the map caused the ghosts to be much less vigilant than in the original game, and I was able to easily outmanoeuver them. It was fun for a bit, but its over now.

  11. @Marketing Man: I don’t think Google intended the pacman logo game to be a challenging game that gets addictive. If they did, imagine the backlash once it is removed. It was little more than gimmick to honor pacman and generate some buzz.

The sound caught me out the first time. Pacman is such old news, I really do not get all the bother and fuss. Nostalgia belongs to the old timers ;-)

  14. Personally I didn’t have a problem with it. I was a big pacman fan when it came out. Still so today!

  15. Quite creative and fun. But not long lasting.

  16. piks says:

I first thought google had some kind of reward for completing the pacman game in his website. Then when i could not get past level 3 i convinced myself otherwise LOL!

  17. I found it pretty annoying myself. Well, at first I thought it was just a gif image with a background sound which made me think WTF. Being able to play the actual game was slightly better but IMO Google is all about simplicity and efficiency, not games instead of logos.

  18. I don’t think it is just about nostalgia. It is also about paying tribute to one of the classic games that help fuel the early growth of the video game industry. Without the growth of videos games, the web might be a very different place.

  19. I seen Pac-Man logo on Google. I am waiting for Google TV ads features.

  20. yeah i’ve also saw and play this game twice there on google.com, it was a unique experience.

  21. free iPhone says:

Could it be played? I didn’t see this as google.com.au didn’t have it, and I use igoogle anyway so miss all of the doodles.
Google here in Aus is actually a bit diffeernt than teh .com anyway – they seem to be trialling a new web 2.0 look and feel.

  22. Karan says:

I had been a big fan of Pac man way back when i was still in kindergarten…
Google is really creative as far as its logo is concerned…

  23. Pacman, yup I agree, us old timers grew up with the game. It was cool of Google to give some recognition to a great game of the past.

    Long Live Pacman!!

  24. Pac-man! Ace – brings back memories of Sinclair Spectrum (both the 48K and the 128k+2).

  25. vektör says:

Ya I think it’s okay for Google to do stuff like that.

  26. I loved the pacman game on google, it feels very nostalgic.

  27. I had some friends who really enjoyed Google putting the pacman game there, but I do think that in the long run Google just needs to stick to the simplicity that brought it to the top, I’ve heard some pretty horror tech stories of people who are computer n00bs calling in to tech support to take Pacman off, lol.

  29. aha lol XD
    i remeber that..
    i had fun playing it.

PacMan was one of those games you played when babysitting and was totally board waiting on the parents to come home. I think it was a fun gimmick Google used to spice up their home page. It was fun, I wont miss it. I’ll wait and see what else they use to surprise us.

  33. I think the diversity in the logos make Google unique in the sense that they aren’t always “Professional”. The game is just one step up from their unique logos and provides an interactive element to their search engine.

  34. you’re right, it was kind of too far… I was desperate with this game…because I wanted to do some things on google, search for keywords…and things like that… and I played a couple of times the game…but it was too bothering with that music…anyways…it’s nice that the guys from google are so creative…:)

  35. Pacman is really fun, but I dont like what Google did with it either.

  36. webhosting says:

yap. i also love pacman too. :)

  38. I personally think the video game was awesome! I think it’s cool on a few levels. One, I found out about the logo through a news article on mashable. Meaning that the logo along gave Google tons of press. Second, I think it’s important for companies to push the boundries and do things unique, and having a pacman game certainly is. I agree, the looping noise was a little overboard, but the game itself was brilliantly crafted and very unique.

  39. tracy ingram says:

I had a lot of fun when google did that. It was a distraction but a fun one!

  40. bidet says:

I enjoyed playing the game but it took a while to realize it was a game and it was annoying when it played in the background.

  41. I really liked packman. They used to have it in all the different grillbars.

But, yes… That was the most anoying thing I’ve ever seen on google when they used it in the header there.

  42. I really liked it! It brought a touch of nostalgia and fun to Google’s homepage. Sure, it probably lowered user interaction time (which means it took longer for the user to see Google’s precious adverts), but it was a good fun thing for Google to do.

Hopefully they’ll do something similar very soon ;)

  43. Aw c’mon, they’re just having a little fun

  44. It so daring action by Google. I visit the google page that you gave and I thought it just a picture when I click on the “Insert Coin” button I can play that Pacman game kinda like it lol =)

  45. Law tutoring says:

It is really a good game. When Pacman was released, most arcade video games in North America were primarily space shooters such as Space Invaders, Defender, or Asteroids.

  46. When Google teamed up with PacMan, it was like going back to the good old days. I did not find it so distracting.

  47. nuno ribeiro says:

This game is so cool…. i wonder if google will present us with more games like this on their homepage!!

Got something to say? Go for it!
