Facebook has a new plan for the web, and that is to put “Like” button on all websites on the internet. Whenever you click on them, your actions are recorded in your facebook account and then they are shared with your friends.
For some, it sounds like an invasion of privacy but for Mark Zuckerberg of FB, it’s one way to get people closer to each other. Read more on Mark’s plans here.
Last year they had released a plugin that could potentially replace blog comments, but that didn’t really take off. Similarly, Google’s Sidewiki project for the “web” also didn’t go well with people. Let’s see how people will respond to “Like” button strategy.

I think it will not hurt privacy. If i don’t want to share this info, i simple should not click the “Like” button. I can bookmark the site if i need to come again.
this will surely become another way to marketing. If i have 1000000 friends, then all of them will find the site that i had clicked on :-)
I don’t think this is going to take off either. How about a dislike button so that I can dislike some sites.
smart, i want one of those……….bad
especially on ppl
It should be interesting how this works out. Facebook are certainly in the news a lot lately as the latest candidate for world domination from MS and Google.
Till then,

This is a massive invasion of privacy. With enough IMDB clicks, ‘Like’ clicks and the like they (corporations, government) will be able to have a profile on every ‘Like’ participant that would make the typical FBI profile just pale in comparison. Think about the Nigerian email con, imagine that con and a million other tuned with your personal information. Or about about having some innocuous preference asserted against you in a court of law. Does anybody today have any sense of privacy, wake up people! Do you really have to click ‘Like’ so that someone can tell you what you like? What about variety?
There will be some discussion about this one.
It mainly depends from what side you see at it.. from a internet marketer or a user point
It means we can share our like websites with our friends.
Just sounds like facebook wants a piece of the social bookmarking market. I doubt this will takeoff. I think the only way a new social bookmarking site can really compete is if they negotiate a deal with firefox to come built into the web browser. It will be interesting to see how people react to this idea. With facebook’s huge user base, there is some chance for success with this project.
so, what the benefit i can get as a advertiser like me?
It’s actually genius how they’re doing this. Now, if you look at facebook profiles their interests leads to either a fan page about that site or a commercial site to purchase items.
@Game Critic I beg to differ, I think that this is going to blow up so huge that most retailers and online stores will be affiliated in one way or another. I mean, it’s literally a limitless market.
Lately, I’ve been caught unawares a few times on various sites where I didn’t realize it was connected to Facebook, so I couldn’t delete certain comments that I didn’t want to be made using my public Facebook profile. :(

In a previous comment an interesting point came up about integrating social bookmarking within the browser.
Is this market not already saturated?
It will become a new business. Just like the twitter. If you have a huge list of followers and friends you can earn a very good amount from twitter at this time. This can be done joining different advertising companies, whose ads will be show on your twitter page.
In the same way, Like button may do the biz.
I’ve got StumbleUpon to like and dislike sites. Facebook is too intrusive. I really don’t need to share everything with my extended network of “friends”
I think .. It is will be interesting to see how people react to this idea..
Facebook is already sitting on over 400 million subscribers, and this move is bound to bring them more. Google must be getting a little bit nervous, but I think that they are seriously looking at the operating system market, and are not going to bother with facebook too much. For now…
@ Marketing Man
I agree 100% but it’s good for visitors of a website to share your content as well.
Interesting. Might Facebook be reinventing the wheel? I may misunderstand but it sounds like Delicious, Digg, or StumbleUpon for Facebook. I wonder if they are going to use synergy and do a joint venture with an existing bookmark site.

People just like blowing things out of proportion with this privacy thing. a like button like this would be great for webmasters. It would also mean that if I dig a certain site & I think my friends are going to like it, I simply click it. If not, I don’t have to click it. I do not see how this invades our privacy.
it’s funny sometimes depending on how the users uses the like button. :)
Ades, one commentator said that the FB button for ‘the web’ will give FB a serious competitive edge over Google. It is so much like Stumbleupon as it provides peer ‘votes’ on a web page or site. Google will get brainstorming and come out with a competitive idea for user votes very soon i think. great blog this. Geoff
I do like this post….I will try to use these tips to the max …Thanks!
I think this like is confusing and bring more mess in it.
Dimi, maybe FB is using this ‘like’ button to spread itself all over The Internet, so the real reason seems confusing.. the ‘like’ links back to a FB profile, and brings people back to FB. Then their advertising gets ‘more eyeballs’ — so it’s pretty smart, eh? GD
A like button like this would be great for webmasters.
You know what? I am starting to warmup to this Like button that Mark Zuckerberg has been talking about. I don’t think its gonna be all over the world like Zach wishes it to be, but I am sure quite alot of interactive websites such as this one will be picking it up as they can see the real power behind it!
it’s funny sometimes depending on how the users uses the like button.
lol i like the idea of DISLIKE button. I wonder how many people will click the dislike button for my blog :)
A like button like this would be great for webmasters
To me, like button is one of the most annoying button on facebook.
There are senseless people that just like every comment or site they visit
It does great for marketing, but with people spamming like this. It totally loses it purpose
Like button is great!
Best when you are trying to reach out to the world
with one person liking your site everyone who is the friend will be expose to you site.
Well done facebook
Website Like button hepls to get targeted fans
He really has a great mind, he makes invasion of privacy look normal to people. He is that influential and convincing. He is revolutionizing the social networking, and we are all here to witness it. Facebook is really a force to be reckoned with, at least on the internet.
