Google and Your Privacy

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google has this to say about the Privacy issue on his interview with CNBC:

If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place. If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines — including Google — do retain this information for some time and it’s important, for example, that we are all subject in the United States to the Patriot Act and it is possible that all that information could be made available to the authorities. watch the video

This statement from Schmidt has caused quite an uproar on the net, Mozilla’s Director of Community Development Asa Dotzler even pointed out that Bing has a better privacy policy than Google and encouraged people to change the default search engine in Firefox to Bing.

This kind of comment from Schmidt definitely won’t go well with their to-be-launched Operating System Google Chrome.

  1. This is the comment of a person who thinks they are so dominant that they can say and do anything they want without consequence. I have been a huge google fan because of how the have provided so many free good service. But when you make a statement like that it shows your total disrespect for the laws and traditions of the country you were founded in. The United States. I would just tell google 1 thing. Every institution no matter how powerful can and will fall eventually. History has show this to be true. You want always be on top and you will not always be able to dictate to the public.

    This just show that, whenever we use anything that was “google made”, information do leak out.

    Worst is if we use the toolbar and chrome, they can track what websites we visits.

    Both Microsoft and Google are evil. Choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil. Neither deserve recognition, support or to be spat upon. Privacy is about freedom and choice, not necessarily “hiding things”. And what is so bad about practicing privacy? I believe that people should maintain privacy to a certain degree. These corporations don’t need to know everything about you. [Personal] “Information” is a hot commodity seller. Information = profits. Money is the “god” of planet earth. Money is the root of evil. As the old saying goes, a fool and his money soon part.

    Google also using tracking cookies in adsense ads.that is true.

  5. Remember that “Loose lips sink ships”. Being circumspect online is very important if you dont want to be flagged as an “undesirable” or a “dissident”. Being aware is the 1st step. Actually doing something about it is the next one.

  6. There is no such thing as 100% privacy on the net anyway. Although previously chummy, Chrome and Firefox are set to compete so this statement by Mozilla is not surprising.

    I think that it is one thing to put stuff out on the web, but I think it is hard to control what others put out there. Google at least allows for a a quick easy way to find out what, if anything, is out on the web and available to the public; if its not true or you want to fight it that is a decision that must be made…

    I think that using internet to do anything we choose to loose some of our privacy. Web network is not required to stay alive and we don’t need to use it. I think that loosing privacy is in this case a matter of choice.

    There is not privacy after patriotic law. All the companies, including google has to share our date with the authorities.
