Vista (Windows7) has a bad UI Usability

Posted in » Usability - by Ades on December 9th, 2009

I have been using Vista for some time already but still find the folder navigation very very unusable. I even deleted the whole folder once when I supposed to delete only one file… file/folder selection in Vista is very subtle compared to Windows XP which makes it difficult to see what is selected and what is not. Maybe it’s just me but I liked Windows XP User Interface much better.

How about you?

I am quite happy with my XP, and will continue using it and learning from the experience others are having with Vista. By the time the first service pack comes out I might be tempted to change over, but for now, no ways!

After hearing such stuffs from my friends I never switched to Vista from XP. And I think many people will stick to this decision unless MS decides to improve the usability and software adherence.

I too am also still running XP instead of switching to Vista. It just seemed more awkward to use and it wasted more computer resources. Still, I am tempted to switch to Windows 7 soon.

I am looking at a new notebook for xmas, and the option of having XP loaded is no more. I will have to settle for Vista Home Premium. I am sure there are skins available that will give us XP look and feel in Vista. I’m going to go look for it streaight away, as I’m sure I saw this on a techie blog.

I absolutely agree with you. I try windows vista, then windows 7 and now i am back to windows XP and i am absolutely contented. I like windows 7 too but i cant run one software what i really need and now i am back to XP.

I don’t experience that kind of situation while using Win 7. Maybe, the problem comes from your laptop. Try to troubleshoot it.

Personally, I like the Windows Vista/7 styled navigation.
    1. It gives you quick access to all parent folders in a single click
    2. You can always choose the fields to be displayed in the detailed layout.
    3. The Explorer view (the left side panel) is something very intrinsic to all operating system - even XP supports it.

Try spending some more time on a 7/Vista machine :)

I would have to agree with you but what other real alternatives are there?

The fact is they have the market cornered and don’t have to spend time and money deveolping a product that is easy to use!

I still do love my XP. Much easier to use than any othe Windows OS.

I had vista for so long but I downgraded to XP. There are lots of features in Vista that are annoying like when you are installing, asks you for many times. Really annoying.

Even I too was quite happy with using Windows XP rather than Vista as my OS. Security considerations are more here in Vista and it is very slow when coming to productivity. One more important issue about it is, there is no back button next to the forward button as one is used to on the windows platform while setting up a connection.

  20. By financekick on Dec 14, 2009

same with me. I prefer XP. Vista not stable to me.

All the negative comments about Windows Vista are amusing. I guess I’m not the only person who refused to make the switch from XP.

I like Vista, but I agree that at times certain aspects (like what you mentioned) are annoying. However, Vista does so many things better than XP, it’s worth the trade-off.

  23. By budzer on Dec 16, 2009

I believe that XP is simple and straight forward. Vista is better. Windows 7 is even better.

  24. By osha 10 hour online training on Dec 17, 2009

Windows vista is, in my opinion, terrible. It is a major step down from XP, and it is not at all in the same league as OS X.

I’m satisfied with XP, Vista has also many advantages, e.g. a stylish interface

  26. By Get 3 Quotes | 3Q on Dec 18, 2009

Well it seems like pretty much everybody here are voting for XP as having the superior interface. I wonder if it is a matter of people being used to the interface more than anything else. Having said this, Microsoft must surely be cognicant of this and at least try to have some form of unformity. Nobody wants to relearn the operating system.

I think that vista is much much better in every aspect and have many advantages, despite the much simpler handling in windows xp. I’m very satified with vista

Still too buggy for me. Downgrading again, once again, to XP!

I don’t like windows Visit 7, first it is slow and second you need to buy new hardware for that.

  31. By rent textbooks on Jan 16, 2010

I warn everybody to stay away from Vista. Window people are very smart, they put out a bad program so they can follow it up with a better one to fix the old one, hence Windows 7… Pretty Savy wouldn’t you say, after all it’s only money. Paul

I am also agree with you that Vista’s user interface is really so poor as compare to XP, i can not have experience with Win 7, hope the issues have been solved in win 7!!
