StackOverflow Careers (Beta)
If you are a programmer or an ISV (Independent Software Vendor) then you have probably heard about Joel Spolsky and his company and his book and his blog and his projects. If not, then he is one of the guys you should follow… especially if you are into creating successful startups, products and hiring bright minds to your IT startups.
He has now launched a new project called StackOverflow Careers (Beta) for programmers to submit their CVs. Basically it will be a repository of CVs of programmers. The idea is to reverse the hiring process where instead of employees searching and submitting their CVs for various companies and job openings, it will be employers who will come to StackOverflow Careers database and look for talented programmers.
It’s similar to JobStreet’s PitchYourTalent.com but it’s only for software developers.

If they promote this site far and wide theyu should get good buy-in from developers and programmers. The only thing is that people who are regularly employed are quite often very loathe to submit their CV’s to this kind of service for fear of getting into trouble at work. How do they intend getting past this, or is this more for freelancers?

@Seatle, CV stands for curriculum vitae which is basically a summary of your academic and work history.
Till then,

Seattle Heating Cooling, CV is short for Curriculum Vitae. “CV” is common in Europe and certain fields, whereas others use “resume” instead.

The more networking opportunities like this on hte interent, the better for all parties concerned. Freelancers are a viable alternative to expensive in-house staff, and if you find the right freelancer it is inevitable that he (or she) will end up being a more permanent part of your organization if the need arises, without having to fork out expensive fees for recruitment agencies.

what about for the federal government like usps, etc. perhaps even get your foot in the door first. you can even try to have a business at home. i think it always best to have something to fall back on. check your local city or government office, etc.
