Yahoo Meme, Posterous and Your Social Media Srategy
As you might know Yahoo launched new service called Meme.Yahoo (Beta) recently. It’s basically an attempt to simplify the whole blogging and information sharing thing.
Will it get adopted? Hmm… given the terrible track record of Yahoo in Social Media sites (Delicious, MyBlogLog and Flickr are slowly dying), it’s hard to tell if this one will succeed. Nevertheless, as a service it’s very simple and extremely easy to use.

Check out my Meme at meme.yahoo.com/ades. Since it’s still in beta, if you want to register for an account you will need an invite for it. I have 15 invites at the moment, if you need one just let me know in the comments section of this post and I will send it to your email.
Posterous
Similar service Posterous.com on the other hand seems to be doing great. Many people are catching up, mainly pushed by early adopters and influencers such as:
- Michael Arrington (Techcrunch) - http://techcrunch.posterous.com
- Robert Scoble (Scobleizer) - http://scobleizer.posterous.com
- Guy Kawasaki (Alltop) - http://holykaw.alltop.com (using custom domain)
- Jason Calacanis (Mahalo) - http://jasoncalacanis.posterous.com
- and more…
How to Keep Up With Social Sites?
Social sites are cropping up like mushrooms after the rain these days. And they are getting replaced at a faster pace by the new ones. Remember sites like Friendster, Hi5, and MySpace? Now all we know is Facebook and Twitter.
It takes time to build your user base in every social site. And when these sites are replaced by the new, more recent one, you will most likely lose many users. Yaro Starak has an interesting read related to this discussion on his blog, titled “Social Media Mistakes: Are You Forgetting Your Fundamentals?“.
He basically suggests that you shouldn’t concentrate on building a user base on Social Sites per se. But your objective should be to utilize them to channel and build a user base on your own blog and most importantly a mailing list. He argues, Social Sites come and go, but your blog (or mailing list, or brand) will stay as long as you want it to stay. I agree.

Hey Ades,
As I see it, I think Yahoo Meme has brighter chances to attract the flock of the social media enthusiasts. As at one point twitter was a new concept but it gained acceptance worldwide, and form the screenshot, I can see that its kinda like Digg and Twitter.
And talking about the Posterous, its already started making the news as the big players have their names associated with it.
Anyways, Thanks Ades for this informative introduction to these social media newbies.

I just recently learned of this Meme by yahoo, but yeah.. I don’t foresee it getting that much success. If it does succeed it will only be because yahoo is pushing it, because certainly if this was done by a small company it would go nowhere.
Till then,
Jean

I think if Yahoo pushes this project hard it will success. The only problem with yahoo is that they cannot keep up with google. They closed some of their projects like geocities…I think they are very weak

Hey Ades!
Thanks for the informative post! I agree with everybody about the fact that Yahoo has a tendancy to make a mess with everything they touch. However, I think that with the new management and especially now that it’s obvious that Social Media will change how we communicate, Yahoo will probably take this seriously and put resources and energy in this project.
Hopefully they’ll learn from previous mistake and listen to their users this time. I see this as a good opportunity to be back in the game. Other than Orkrut, Google hasn’t much of a Social platform yet. This might be a good move for the long term if it’s managed properly which means differently than how Yahoo has been managed in the last couple of years.
I’d be interested to have an invite if you have any left ;)
thanks for the great post!

Again Yahoo is trying to do something to gain on Google, and again they will probably fail. Cant expect that this service will rise them , but oh well they have to try it…

By assignemnet Help on Sep 29, 2009
Hey Ades,
I agree with Yaro that sticking with the fundamentals is the main factor that will help you out in getting success in this social media web.
Posterous is a amazing platform as I have experienced it. And to be true meme seems to fall flat as it looks like a attempt to fight the twitter, which is surely not possible in present scenario.
Anyways thanks for this wonderful post.
By Chris Peterson on Sep 29, 2009
Hey Ades,
Yaro is so right as online income has a significant invesment dimenssion of time.It ain’t gonna be worth just doing it if it ain’t producing results in short term and long term as well.
I think your suggestion is cool. Real cool screenshots!

Yeah, Yahoo Meme looks so good. It seems a good service.
By Blogging Guide on Sep 30, 2009
Wow, I look at this and just instantly think, twitter! Fair play to Yahoo for having a go at competing with the social networking giant, but sadly I think its going to fall flat on its face.

Good Morning Ades. If there are any left, I would love an invite too. Yaro raises a very good point as far as social media usage is concerned. Building of your own personal brand is definitely what it is all about.

Your discussion of “How to Keep Up With Social Sites” is very timely. A few years ago, I wanted to try all the latest web 2.0 sites. These days, it’s hard to find time to read a description of each one. The article you mentioned by Yaro Starak brought a good perspective to the issue.

Hi,
Yahoo meme seems much like a mix of twitter and digg, I have been using it for past 3 days and to be true I didn’t found it attractive at all.
Coming to Posterous I can surely say that this application is here to stay, you have many features like customizing your blogs CSS for your freely hosted blog, which is for me is a amazing thing.
For the beginners this can be a amazing tool.
By ZoopMedia on Oct 4, 2009
Personally, I hate Yahoo. They always seem to fail in the face of adversity. With that being said, I can see this becoming popular until someone else comes out with a similar concept. I will end up learning about it, because it never hurts to know as much as possible.

It’s crazy, all of these social networking sites and how to keep up with them. I just found a new one called Aardvark.
It’s pretty cool. When you sign up, you tell them 3 topics you’d be comfortable answering questions about. Once you are signed up, you can ask any question, about any subject, and within minutes, you’ll have answers in your inbox, pretty cool, check it out.

By Chelle on Oct 5, 2009
You are probably already out of invites…but if you know of another way I could check yahoo meme out, I would love that. It reminds me a lot of tumblr…
So true about the don’t build up the social site - build your own site. I saw a lot of people waste a ton of time/resources only to have it reduced to nothing later down.
By Minnesota Attorney on Oct 5, 2009
I’m not sure why Yahoo would be launching something so similar to Posterous. Is there something that Meme.Yahoo is doing better or different to set it apart?

By Free iPhone on Oct 9, 2009
Thanks for the invitation - I have signed up and started my meme. Don’t fully understand it’s worth though. It’s just another way of clogging up the net with duplicate content. If the big search engines hate dup content so much, why would Yahoo implement a new way of doing it!?
By tunepal on Oct 10, 2009
ehm..will try. Just wonder who will invite me..
By titan on Oct 12, 2009

By How to make quick money on Oct 15, 2009
Hey Ades,
The fact remains the same that people move to the new technology when it arrives firstly. I agree to Yaro that nothing is here to stay, today we are talking about Twitter and Facebook, tomorrow we will have something new then we will kepp on buzzing about it. It seems to be never ending.
Though meme is not at all impressive to me, it looks a mere replica of twitter and posterous is another blogging platform which I think will attract the newbies to have a hand on it.

I totally adore Yahoo! Meme. It’s really fun to use though it needs some extra final touches and some great marketing to really burst into the blogosphere. Nice though!
