I went over to the official Google blog to check the story out and I must say that while I was initially confused as to why they would acquire reCaptcha, rather than just develop their own system, it became clear what their objective is with this purchase.
It is part of their huge book scanning effort, and not to prevent spam posts by bots on blogs. They are really looking at creating the biggest repository of knowledge, ever!

@3Q, that’s exactly why they acquired reCaptcha. Since Google is already into digitizing all books, reCaptcha would help them do that.
