Making money with twitter

sptweets.pngSince twitter is yet to be monetized by its founders, more and more companies are coming up with programs that can make you money with your twitter account. Last time I have talked about magpie, today I want to mention about Sponsored Tweets by Izea. It’s still in beta and accepting early signups for Tweeters at the moment.

Jeremy of shoemoney got $250 for his first tweet, he has interesting post about it and “getting paid to tweet” topic in general. I have signed up and set my price to $5 per tweet :) let’s see what happens.

Adding “Share on Facebook” button to your posts

Here is line of code that if added to your wordpress blog theme will create a link “Share on Facebook”. This will make it easier for your readers to share your posts on Facebook.

No plugin needed. Just add this code where you want the link to appear, but make sure it’s in the loop… somewhere between title of the post and comments codes:

<a href=”http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=<?php the_permalink();?>&t=<?php the_title(); ?>” target=”blank”>Share on Facebook</a>

You can replace the “Share on Facebook” text with facebook button.

That’s one way to increase RSS subscribers

I was downloading some great web2.0 icons from WebDesignerDepot.com but was not able to proceed with my download until I had to join their RSS. I thought it was creative, even though I found it a bit forceful.

Here is how they have done. Download links were password protected, and they have placed the “password” in their RSS posts.

wddepot.png

The password could only be seen at the end of every post on RSS feed (see below).

Actually, I didn’t mind signing up for their RSS because the blog is excellent. Therefore, I believe this tactic will work well on blogs that have good content and not so much on the blogs that have poor content. Because subscribing to good blogs is not a big deal for many users.

So, that’s one way to increase the RSS subscriber count.

My Suggestion to Dropbox

dropbox_logo.pngFirst of all, if you are not already using Dropbox, go get it here.

It’s one of the best free backup and PC synchronizing services on the net. It’s simple and it works.

How it works:

Dropbox offers you free 2GB space online that you can use to backup your files. In order to simplify your backup activities, they provide a client software which you can install on your PC. This software creates a “My Dropbox” folder in your PC (you can specify the location). After it’s done, you just drop all the files and folders into your “My Dropbox” folder and that’s it.

After that, your job is done, the software will now start to automatically upload all the files to your online 2GB account. And every time there is a change in your “My Dropbox” folder, it will automatically synch it with your online account.

Additionally you can install the software on more than one PC (at work, at office) and it will keep all of them in synch. No more file transfers through pen drives from office to work!

The small issue:

I am a long time user of dropbox and one thing I would like to see changed in the service is the small improvement in their software. Currently the software creates one folder (My Dropbox) in your PC and only backs up things inside this particular folder. Any other folder or files outside this folder cannot be backed up unless you put them inside your “My Dropbox” folder. Continue reading →

WordPress as eShop and Social Bookmarking Site – part6

This is a continuation of series on “Different Uses of WordPress”. Previously I have covered:

WordPress as eShop (Shopping Cart)

While WordPress has already been covered as eCommerce site in Part-1, this is a theme that is worth mentioning here. First of all, it’s free. Secondly, it comes with multiple free themes. Finally, its web2.0 features with ajax functions make it a better choice if you are setting up an eshop.

shopperpress

ShopperPress is a fully featured shopping cart plugin for wordpress, suitable for selling any types of products, services, and digital downloads online. It has built in support for multiple payment gateways like paypal, 2checkout, worldpay, moneybookers etc allowing you to accept payments online.
    .
ShopperPress also comes with its own multiple elegantly designed free themes. Adding products to the shop is done through creating pages and posts in WP. Products can have multiple options (weight / sizes / brands etc).

Laws related to Software Development

Here is some laws to take into consideration when developing a software:

Hofstadter’s law
It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take Hofstadter’s Law into account.

Brooks’s law
Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later.

Lister’s law
People under time pressure don’t think faster.

The ninety-ninety rule
The first 90% of the code accounts for the first 90% of the development time. The remaining 10% of the code accounts for the other 90% of the development time.

Worse is better (New Jersey style)
Describes how a seemingly “inferior” product can be better from a user perspective. A limited but easy-to-use software may be more popular among users than a “better”, more comprehensive one.

Wirth’s law
Software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware becomes faster.

Blogged 2.0 looks cool

blogged20.pngBlogged‘s new 2.0 version looks really great, lots of improvements. It’s more facebook’ish now, you can post stuff, follow people, comment on anything etc.

If you don’t know what is Blogged, it’s a blog directory that rates blogs and let people rate them too. With the new version, they have done it more like a Social Network site rather than a simple blog directory with rating capability, which is great.

If you have blog you should definitely check out Blogged. (Rate my blog at Blogged here)

topic for discussion…

if you go against google’s stand regarding selling paid links and posting paid reviews on your blog, in your opinion does that mean you are doing something unethical? what do you think?

Windows 7, pre-order and get 50% or more

windows7 pre-order and get 50% discount

Amazon has already started Windows 7 pre-order promotions. You can use these promotions on your Windows 7 project that we talked earlier. Btw, how is it coming along? Mine, not so much… I did register InstallWindows7.net though. I’m thinking to create a site on how to install, troubleshoot, upgrade Windows7.
