PDF: Know your UpTime
What does it really mean when a hosting company says they provide 99% uptime guarantee?! It means they guarantee not more than 7 hours (seven hours!!!) of downtime a month or not more than 3.5 days of downtime a year.
So if your business can’t afford to lose downtime of 10 minutes, don’t ever get close to those companies who offer 99% uptime! Rather go for companies who guarantee not more than 10-20 minutes of downtime per year.
Below is a cheat-sheet on uptime calculation provided by guys over at pingdom.

Thank you for your useful article. Yeah, it sound good when they say 99% uptime. It sounds good…before reading this article. To be honest I never did calculations so thought 99% uptime is great.
Now I know how wrong I was.
Thank for sharing.

I never did calculated the bad side of 99% uptime, but still after reading your article I think that is acceptable to me. In the real world actually I found 99% is not even guaranteed although every hosting company say so. And finding a good web hosting company is very hard task especially if you very concerned about the speed and up time, I have selected one hosting company after reading many comments and websites post hosting reviews but when I have subscribed site monitoring service which reports daily uptime, realized that they are not so good, those reviews must be affiliates of the hosting company.
By the way, how do you select your hosting company ?

I have been with pair.com for almost a decade, and not thinking of changing in the near future.

I didn’t realize 99% uptime is really so much downtime. 7 hours is a lot of downtime. Until your post, I didn’t realize there was a better option. Thanks!

I guess it really depends on how popular your site is, if you can (or can’t) afford to lost 1% of however many hits you get.
Are there any sites that offer 100% uptime, or is that impossible?

I think that hosting your website on hosts that offer only a 10 minutes down time per year, would be very expensive.

the more interesting question is… what is the best (and cheapest) way to measure a hosting provider’s uptime. we use some free tools, but they aren’t very robust.
