Why including “daily” is not a good idea for blog domain name

Posted in » Advice to Businesses, Blogging Tips - by Ades on January 9th, 2009

Choosing a domain name for your blog can be quite difficult (unless you do like me… put your name first (ades) and then the word “blog” after it ;)

But one of the things to consider when choosing a domain name is, try to avoid using the word “daily” in the domain name (unless it’s absolutely necessary). Especially if you are going to run the blog alone. Because as a human being you are going to miss a day or two, and it won’t be good (on your part) if your domain says “daily” but you do not provide posts on a daily basis. Or you resort to publishing low quality posts just to have a new post everyday.

Also when you run a niche blog on a particular topic, it would be really difficult to churn out daily posts on a regular basis non-stop. Therefore you have to be careful in defining your niche. It should be something that grows everyday, changes everyday, gives you room to write new stuff…etc. Otherwise, after few months of blogging there would be nothing left to talk about, and you would be off the blogging race soon after.

dailydomain.pngI think DailyBlogTips is an exception. Daniel Scocco has been doing some great job for some time. But even he, lately has shifted to answering one question per day instead of posting a normal post. Does that mean his blog url will change to DailyBlogFAQs now? ;) But you know where I am getting right?

Having a “daily” word in the domain name defines a certain mental image and expectation in the users’ minds. If you say “daily cartoon” then the users would expect from you daily cartoons… So, when you do not fulfill that expectation, then that mental image is destroyed. As a result your “brand” (or reputation) will be affected negatively.

Summary

To wrap up the post, think twice if you want to have “daily” word in your domain name, unless it’s something like “daily ramblings etc” in that case it wouldn’t matter. Also make sure that the niche that you have chosen to blog about is not a static topic, something that can’t be written (i.e finished) in 200 posts.

You make a good point. For those who try to post daily, one option is to schedule the posts for a future date. (Wordpress offers this.) For example, write seven posts a week and schedule them to be published on the blog each day for seven days. But as you say, even with this scheduling feature, it would be very difficult to post a quality article every day for an extended period of time.

This is an important point when selecting a domain. Domain is the most important part of your site and once you select it and promoted most of the places, now it’s harder to turn back.

For an example, “AdedBlog” there is the “Blog” in the domain, it means it could be only a blog brand, not any other network or site.

At the same way adding the word “Daily” makes the blog a daily resource. Daily writing is good but mental frustration can produce low quality or no articles.

Daily is not an option for me. 2-3 posts per week max.

I don’t think you should refer to ANY time frame in your domain name or site logo. As we’re all human and have lives, we’re all bound to miss the odd post for some reason or other.

If you set out to do a post on a time frame, just stick to it, but don’t ruin your brand if you miss a post.

Ades is right, don’t ever consider using “daily” on any of your domains or blogs! ;)

Daily can be a hard statement to live up to. Blogging can lose it’s appeal quickly, especially for those bloggers that do not see a relatively quick increase in readership. It can be very hard to blog to nobody on a regular basis.

I was just looking around and the blogosphere and I saw this post.
I noticed this also because I do read Daniel’s blog posts. I noticed that he was doing question and answer in every other post. I wanted to make a blog post about this, but decided that my blog is new to start having post like that.
