Brian Gardner’s New Project - StudioPress
Brian Gardner, the person who revolutionized premium wordpress themes by his first project RevolutionTheme, has came up with a new project - StudioPress.com
Since it’s a newly launched project, currently there is only one wp theme available. However, more themes expected to be added very soon. The first theme is for real estate sites.
If it works, don’t fix it
As you all know, RevolutionTheme project had been replaced with R2 (RevolutionTwo), and became Open Source. That meant, as I predicted no more less income for both affiliates and Brian Gardner himself. Brian wanted to change his business model from selling themes to selling support.
Before revolution themes were open source, they were selling like hot cakes. Obviously after they became “free”, no one wanted to pay for the support. Because most bloggers are very familiar with wordpress and most of them wouldn’t need a paid support to customize their themes.
Revolution2 was a huge misstep for Brian (from financial point of view). In order to correct this business decision, he had two choices; to bring back the old revolution themes or to launch a new project. Brian has chosen the second option. And I think that was a wise decision. Otherwise it would have been even more confusing for his existing customers from revolution-1 project. Because they are already confused with the whole discontinuation of revolution-1 project and revolution2/open source thing and how it affects them.
Making Money for Bloggers
StudioPress.com is a great news for bloggers. Because it means “back to making money” for most bloggers. Brian Gardner is a great designer, and his themes are one of the best wp themes on the net. Therefore, I have no doubt that this project will be a success.
His affiliates are paid 25% of the sales, that means if you sell one template worth $79.95 you will get $20.00. And if you sell all-inclusive package ($299.95) then you will get $75.00 of commission.
Are you ready to make money?

I always loved themes by brian gardner. They are very well organised and definitely has alot of selling points!

I think it is of stupid to start a new theme club. I guess money always talk. Isn’t it unfair for the people who paid for all inclusive package back then.
What makes people think Brian won’t do this again in the future. Create about 10 themes.. and stop.. and then start a new website.
Revolution2 was doomed from the start.
By Brian Gardner on Jan 2, 2009
Mike, just to address your comment - when Revolution Two launched, anyone who purchased the original All Inclusive package was automatically upgraded to the Pro Plus package on the new site. I would say that having access to 20+ themes (and any future ones on Rev Two) plus support got $399.95 is a pretty good deal. I don’t think that I have ever. Not to mention on the new site I am extending a 25% discount to all Rev purchasers as well.

Good luck to Brian with this new theme. Hopefully his free revolution theme will drive some paying customers to his new StudioPress theme project. It is people like him that make WordPress the fantastic platform that it is!

StudioPress.com is an excellent domain name and brand for such a project. However, people are already used to the StudioPress theme from DailyBlogTips. Was it also created by Brian?
(I use the Studio Press theme without actually knowing who wrote it  )

I love Brain Gardner’s wordpress theme, sad to know that his open-source project flopped, perhaps the only way for the project to survive is to intro some sort of ‘affiliate’ program, say to get a free copy, one must sign up 2 subscriber…

Interested read and the theme looks great. I didn’t know to much about Brian Gardner but it does sound like he made a mistake releasing his themes for free. Good Luck to him in his new project.

@Rice Blogger
agree, studiopress and rev2 has so much in common, what makes studiopress unique and different from rev2? brian needs a whole new concept, perhaps something simple as oppose to rev2’s approach?
By Mikael on Jan 4, 2009
I originally hated when Brian changed his strategy and I found the Rev2 solution to be a bad idea all along. Not because you had to pay for support which was fine but because the themes were created so that you had to know a lot about Wordpress to modify or even use them properly. Giving away themes that are hard to use can be a considered a good idea.
So I’m glad to see that he is returning to the old model as I agree that his themes are certainly some of the top themes available.

It’s disappointing that Brian Gardner’s idea of selling support for an open source theme wasn’t successful. I realize that some companies can effectively use this model (e.g. the makers of Magento shopping cart). But I agree with you that Wordpress is so well known that most bloggers wouldn’t pay for the support.

I don’t think Brian’s open source move was a flop. He still licenses the Revolution under GPL, gets on the good side of WP.org. Everyone wins. His forums have over 5000 members. I’d say he has done a great job and I hope he keeps his “for the WP community” attitude going, keeping his themes under the GPL license. I am correct am I not. Even though he sells his themes, they are still licensed as GPL? Aren’t they?

This is quite a fabulous but yet subtle theme. Making such a mark with his first project, now that’s a great achievement.
Looking forward to the up and coming themes this guy has in store for us.

Revolution plus was a fabulous template, revolution church is even better. I really have to congratulate Brian Gardner on superb, clean and infinitely useable templates.
I sincerely look forward to more in the future.
