We continue our reports on different uses of WordPress, besides using it as a blogging platform.
- Part 1 – WordPress as Job Board and e-Commerce Site
- Part 2 - WordPress as Review Site and Portal
- Part 3 - WordPress as Discussion Forum and Membership Site (you are here)
- Part 4 - WordPress as Social Network Site & Contact Manager
- Part 5 - WordPress as Newsletter Mailing Script and FAQ Management System
Today we will be looking at two more uses of WP; as Discussion Forum and Membership Site.
WordPress as Discussion Forum

.
Simple:Press is a free wordpress plugin that will turn your blog into a discussion forum. It’s surprisingly very advanced and feature rich.
It fully integrates into your WP based site utilising the same user records and database and displaying on a single WP page. It is fully customisable and comes with a number of skins and sets of icons to get your started.

WordPress as Membership Site

.
Suma Plugin for WordPress is a membership and subscription management plugin for the WordPress. It turns your blog into a pay-to-view, membership (i.e subscription-based) website.
You can restrict access to any pages, posts and comments. Members without subscriptions see only the title, or excerpt of the post depending on the administrator’s preference.
Suma also manages the recurring billing of the subscriber according to the details of the subscription plan they choose. The administrator is able to define different types of subscription plans and has the option of including one-time initial setup fees, free-trial periods, and discounted periods as well as flexible billing periods defined in days, weeks, months or years.

Hi,
Thanks Ades for this post, especially the link at the top, about the first 2 post.
I’m really looking about to put a job board.
good news, but is there the free one ?
That memebership site plug-in great! Bit of a god send actually.
Ades,
the membership plugin is a great find!!
Thanks very much for sharing.
This is my first time here, I believe I am going to have a great read.

ehm..this is new to me. Looks like a good info.
I’m looking free plugins :D
Wonder, if any one can beat Vbulletin in current situation. Hence its too costly, this could be an alternative for VB.
Suma Plugin is really cool. I’ve wondered how people limit their blog to paid memberships. I thought it was done through custom coding. This is amazing.
The power of WordPress seems virtually unlimited! What other offering is out there that can be utilised for so many purposes?
This is proof of how flexible the wordpress platform is, no wonder it’s such a hit on the world wide web!
its good for membership site. I like to have one site like this.
Hi,
Does the suma plugin and simple press work together ok? I know the simple press uses the wordpress login for registrations but wasn’t sure about suma.
There is another wordpress plugin for memberships called wishlist member or something like that which is pretty feature rich. It too uses the wp login screen so I’m not sure how that and the forum would work together as well.
Thanks much,
Mark
All of us should have great opportunity to make friends, customers and share our reviews on different topics through this….
Great work!
I found the WordPresstv tutorial but the list of themes is displayed differently, and when I try to download, it takes me to a zipfile. Nothing at all like the easy wordpress tutorial unfortunately.
Just a plugin can turn my blog into a forum, that too free.. Am I dreaming!! Somebody pinch me :-)
VB is probably not as seo friendly as a wordpress discussion forum
