Revolution Theme goes Open Source

Brian Gardner, the creator of popular Revolution Themes for WordPress has made the themes open source. That’s right, the themes will be free after this. Old themes will be discontinued and the website closed. The new website (www.revolutiontwo.com) has already been launched with initial 10 themes.

Below are the Live Demo links to some of these new themes:

Just like any other open source project, the support for the themes won’t be provided. If you need a support you will have to pay for it. The fees are quite reasonable though; $99.95 for one year unlimited support, and $149.95 for lifetime unlimited support.

But I am sure, most of the experienced bloggers won’t need support, they just need an access to free, professionally designed themes ;) For that reason, I am not sure if Brian and his team can earn the projected income as they planned with this new business model.

Because previously Revolution Themes were selling like hot cakes, and I am sure they (Brian and his team) made tons of money. In good month, I alone sold close to $700 worth of themes for them. But now, since they became open source, it’s difficult for bloggers to sell subscription based plans for Revolution2. I am afraid bloggers (i.e affiliates) will be shifting to other premium wordpress theme providers like OmniTheme, WooThemes, PressBox etc. thus reducing the earnings of Revolution2 team significantly.

Whatever it is, good luck to them and thanks for the free themes!

Yup. It is great to see one of the best blog designers supporting uncopyright.

  2. This is big news. I’ve always loved Revolution. This was one of the first great magazine styled blogs. It will be interesting to see if the release of Revolution’s code into open source spawns offshoot themes.

  3. how does revolution compare to thesis? i’m setting up a new blog soon, and was planning to use thesis (which i’ve already purchased). but this theme also sounds great. do you recommend one over the other?

Yeah.. I’m surprised Brian went to this route considering how successful Revolution was. I alone sometime sold over $5,000 worth of Revolution themes per month. Imagine there are at least few hundred of other affiliates.

I think Brian made enough money from Revolution to go to this route. In any case.. very unselfish move and a real desire for the “open source”

    wait. Its free??

  7. I have been an affiliate of Brian’s for less than 6 months and made almost $500 promoting his Revolution themes using a discount code to save people 20% off their purchase. Now that the themes are free it looks like I’m out of a job.

  8. Thanks a lot for the share, will have to have a browse through the themes

  16. I’m looking for the music that plays when you go into diplomacy mode and the leader appears. I think it’s really cool.

Got something to say? Go for it!
