Auto responder feature (kind of) has been added to Gmail. Actually, the main purpose of this new feature is to allow users to create pre-written emails for repetitive replies. So, for example next time you get an email that needs a standard reply, you can just use back one of the “canned responses” (that’s what they are called) that you have created earlier.
Enabling the Feature
In order to enable it, you need to login to you Gmail and go to Settings > Labs > Canned Responses. Click “enable it” and save your preferences.
Creating Canned Response
Now compose a new message, and type the text of your auto-responder. Once you are done, click on Canned Responses link (see screenshot below) and choose New Canned Response. It will popup a window. Give your auto-responder a name and save it.

Creating the Auto-Responder
Now the most important part – creating a filter. As you know gmail allows you to create different kinds of filters. As for your auto-responder, if you want to send everyone who emails you an auto-response, then you have to enter your own email in the To: field when setting a criteria for your filter (see below).

That would mean, all emails that is sent to your@gmail.com would receive an auto-response from you.
In the next step (see below), tick Send canned response and choose the appropriate “canned response” from the drop down menu.

You are done with your auto-responder! Use it wisely though. Don’t spam!
P.S When replying manually, if you want to use particular canned response, you just have to select it from the drop down menu and it will fill your text area automatically.

This feature is great, unfortunately I only just purchased an autoresponder last week without realising this was available!
i guess, i will give a try. Its good and i will use this entry as guidelines.
That is a great feature. I guess you should remove your current comment spam filter technique. I tend to do mistakes while calculating.
That means something wrong with your math :) It’s just a simple math, you should get it correctly.
Should try it out. From the screenshot I get a feeling that they are complicating things :)
Cheers,
Ajith
Very cool. This is the first I have heard about this. AdesBlog is always on the cutting edge. Thanks for keeping us informed about the latest cool stuff.
not really understand. But i believe its worth to try. Another good idea from Google.
Nice feature, I will give it try…
Thanks for the step by step. I added this feature with an attachment to my canned response and tested it. I got the autoresponse but no attachment. Any ideas how to make it work with an attachment? Yes, the attachment is in my saved draft canned response.
This would be a great feature, if the developer would make it work cross-platform. It currently does not work in Internet Explorer at all, and the developer does not seem to care.
how to make this work with attachments also…as pointed out by nancy in one of the previous comments
i don’t think it can be done with attachments
Very disappointing that it creates a return address that includes the phrase +canned.repsonse@
Makes it rather useless for any sort of real purpose.
Ades is right about no attachments.
Hope they get this to work real soon
Like others, I think this is great, but I too would like the attachments to work. If its something like an image attachment, any way of embedding it right in the message ( I tried using a basic IMG tag with a link to an image on another site with no success ).
Thanks for a great step-by-step explanation.
I have to agree that the address including “+canned.response” makes the feature a bit less useful. I would like to use it for business purposes and it seems as though that would not be as attractive to a customer.
I just wish gmail they had a delay build in the vacation autoresponder.
