Firefox Add-On: Flagfox

flagfox.pngThis firefox plugin displays a country flag in the URL field for a given website, depicting the location of the current website’s server. It also provides quick access to detailed location and webserver information (see screenshot).

Besides being a neat firefox plugin, you could use this tool to identify some phishing sites as well. For example, if you access www.paypal.com and see some unknown flag for the server, you better don’t login on that website!

  1. Excellent idea. I would love to see how many sites are in India.

In addition to the reasons you stated, this plugin would be great for allowing you to see if someone’s blog really is in the country they say—instead of someone pretending to be in a country just to sell stuff.

  2. This is intriguing. But I don’t know how reliable such a plugin would be. A person’s site could easily be hosted in a different country from their base of operations. The server being in a certain country doesn’t really tell you much.

  3. personally I like SEOpen, which also shows whois info and more.. this is cool though too

i guess not many people know about this one. Its become interesting if we know how to use this add one. Thanks for sharing with us. :)

  6. This plugin is addictive. It’s really fun to see where blogs are located. It’s not always accurate, since the plugin can only see where the server is located, but it’s still cool.

  7. Firefox does have some awesoem addons but it just annoys me how often I open it and it says it needs to update

  8. Another great plugin for the firefox.

  11. i love this addon because its so nifty! :)
but i’m curious as to why its a bit on the big side (~450kb) because it simply displays a flag of the country of origin and a few lookups..
it would be great if you could trim it down – is it possible to downsize the addon? i’m sure many firefox users would like to cut down on the memory usage of firefox and a smaller addon would help alot.

  12. great plugin, but doesn’t look that useful to me

Got something to say? Go for it!
