WP Plugin: Next of Kin

Last year I wrote a post titled “What will happen to your blog, if you die?“. Today someone posted a comment giving a link to the wp plugin called next of kin. I thought I should post about this plugin since it’s a pretty good solution for the above mentioned topic.

What the plugin does?

It’s a configurable plugin that monitors your own visits to your wordpress system, and will send you a warning email after a number of weeks (or whatever interval you put in) you didn’t login to your blog. If you fail to login to your blog even after that, the system will send a pre-configured email that was written by you beforehand with all the login details to your blog and other important information (e.g login to your adsense, advertiser details…etc) to whichever email you choose. Isn’t that something?!

First of all, God forbid that such thing happen to anyone. But if it does happen, especially to someone who is making quite a lot of money from blogging, and if he didn’t tell all the necessary information to his family — then that would be a very unfortunate thing! It would be a pity for his family to be left in the darkness, knowing nothing about what to do next.

So it’s better to be prepared. For we know for sure that the death will come, God says in the Quran “Everyone will taste death, then to Us you will be ultimately returned.” [Quran 29:57]. The only thing we do not know is, when it will come? And that is the point of this plugin — to be ready for this unexpected reality.

Somebody keep trying hit and access my affiliate links and my php files. Do you think I need this plugin Ades?

  2. Ades says:

i think you need this plugin instead, to block the user from accessing your files.

indocontest: i think you need it when someone is trying to kill you…not hitting your link….hehe

this is a good plugin in a weird manner…

Hey, thanks for linking to me Ades :D

I wanted to mention one smart thing you should do if you’re going to use this plugin. Encrypt all sensitive information in PGP with the public key of people you want to email. That way, even if your weblog is cracked, your private information will still be secure.

If your loved ones don’t have a pgp key, create one yourself and email it to them and tell them to store it safely. In the case of a problem, even if they can’t figure it out, they should be able to call a techie to arrange it for them.

Another reason to use this system BTW is in case you get into a accident and get, say, into a coma but you need money for support; I noone has your credit info, you may have loads of money but no-one will be able to draw them.

With this way, you can just email them the PIN to your credit and debit cards which even if your site is hacked cannot be used by itself.

    LoL @Rice Blogger.
I download the askapache plugin, activate it and then *bump* can’t access my Admin page. :(

  7. Ades says:

-db0, thanks for the info, those are really useful information.

-indocontest, why do you think they want to access your links? so that they can replace the ID’s with their own? as long as those pages are not writable it shouldn’t bring you any harm.

  8. indocontest says:

Yeah. Let this guy do what ever he want. As long as they don’t bring any bad lead to my CPA.
    Thanks Ades.

Good thinking. If one can be prepared by writing a will, why not be prepared to safely hand over the blog? Whether it makes money or not is not the issue. My heirs may just want to keep it or something for sentimental reasons. At least no harm in hoping!!

    Interesting plug-in.

  12. The best thing about this plugin is that you can customize all the time intervals and messages.

As you may have noticed, it makes your blog an online memorial.

  13. Eliza J. says:

It really seems an interesting plug-in due to it’s customization features.

Thanks for letting us know about it.

  14. Well if I die then I would assume my family would have bigger concerns than maintaining the visitor base for my blog. A very morbid yet interesting idea for a plugin.

  15. I’ve share my blogs information with my partner. If I die, i hope she will continue to maintain and enhance it.

This is weird but useful plugin I think..

  16. I think this is great for our content management system. Clients buy them and then done touch them for months. As developers it bugs us, so much work and then they dont use it. But sending them an email every X days is brilliant. Thanks Ades.

MM, you have given a very useful idea how to use this plugin in a business environment. Thanks for the tip!
