My Online Shared Folder

4shared.jpgI have created a shared folder (see pic) at http://www.adesblog.com/files.php.

The folder will contain some useful freewares, sharewares and other interesting files that are worth to share.

The folder works in a Windows-like manner, so just click on the folder names to see their contents. Clicking on a file name will show the file information. In order to download a particular file, click on the link (globe icon) at the far right.

I am still in the process of uploading softwares and files, so make sure to check back later for more useful stuff.

How it is done?

The page is created using 4shared.com. It’s a free service that offers 5GB storage space and 10GB bandwidth/month for your file downloads.

As I discovered, disadvantage of the free service is: 1) it is with ads (of course!) and 2) you need to login at least every month, if you do not login more than 30 days, your account will be deleted.

The url of my folder on 4shared’s site is at adesblog.4shared.com.

  1. Very useful site. Now bloggers can share files easily with others without any worry. Yet another useful link from Ades!

  2. Ades, what a brilliant idea, and 5gb storage thats a great storage site, will be happy with some adverts.

How secure is the site? How long have you been using it and what are the glitches that you have come across?

  4. PS3 says:

I was thinking the same Eva.

My other question is whether they send you a reminder before deleting the account, a month isn’t long.

  5. Ades says:

I think it’s very secure. Especially if you make your files private. And if you share some of your folders as i did, then those are safe too. Since people can only download files and not upload. (I believe there is an option to let people upload files to your folder too).

I have been using it for the past few days.

  6. Oh great post Ades, i have just started my blog and am always looking for freeware. Loging on every 30 days is a bit of a bind but at least it is free.

  7. Privacy is always a concern, and if they’re displaying ads (just like gmail) then they are trawling your content and matching it to adwords (or the equivalent they’re using).

This process might be automated, but certain trigger words can still throw your content into the folder flagged as potential undesirables.

So be aware of what content you save online with services like these, whether it be politically incorrect or trade secrets.

Thanks for sharing your stuff though, Ades, am going to have a good poke around in your treasure chest! Have an awesome day!

That almost made my day. I’m looking for a windows bases solution to share files within my office. I’m sure there’s a simple solution, I just don’t know what it is.

  9. Looks pretty cool, I can see the benefits it brings but security is an issue here. Sure they can claim there site is secure etc, but have they actually had a professional cracker try and worm their way in?

I have never tried this kind of service before. Thank you for sharing your stuffs with us.

Got something to say? Go for it!
