Twitter as a source of traffic

Are you a blogger but not a twitter user? I don’t think that statement is true to many bloggers. Because most of the bloggers are already twitter users. But just in case if you are the one who blogs but doesn’t use twitter (yet). Maybe you should start using it after all?

I will give you a very good reason why you should join Twitter. Twitter is increasingly becoming one of the top sources of traffic to many people’s blogs.

JasonCalacanis: Twitter is the #2 referrer of traffic to my blog… behind Google. Wow.

ShoeMoney: twitter has now become the 4th largest source of referral traffic to this blog so that in a round about way would I guess contribute to monetization. I have seen people spam affiliate links and stuff so I am guessing that works too…

Top Traffic Sources to ProBlogger:

1. google / organic – 42.89%
2. (direct) / (none) – 17.59%
3. google / referral – 5.10%
4. stumbleupon / referral – 2.54%
5. yahoo / organic – 2.05%
6. twitter.com / referral – 1.87%
7. lifehacker / referral – 1.74%
8. delicious / referral – 1.65%
9. bloglines / referral – 0.81%
10. technorati / referral – 0.79%

GuyKawasaki: Twitter increased traffic. Jim Long is a cameraman for NBC. He flys around the world on Air Force One covering whatever the president does. One day he tweeted that he saw Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical 2 eating and smooching in Cafe Sydney in Australia while George W. was at APEC/OPEC. Someone picked up this tweet and truemored it, and this brought Truemors tens of thousands of page views. By the way, if you think insipid celebrity sightings doesn’t create traffic, you’re very wrong.

So if you are not a twitter user yet, then head straight to twitter.com and get yourself an account. Don’t forget to follow me huh? http://www.twitter.com/ades

If you find it difficult to tweet, try using this plugin which will post your blog posts automatically to your twitter account.

Tweeter as a good source of traffic is really surprising. Now this is surely gonna convert me into a tweeter user.

  7. Its on my list of things to do, just worried that it will take up far too much time to manage. How long do you think the average twitter spends keep it updated.

I’m a newer twitter user, and so far I am proceeding carefully. I know its for building relationships though, and I intend to mean it when I follow other twitters. @skyberrys if you want to say hi!

  10. Ades says:

don’t take twitter (or anything for that) matter as a heavy burden to do. just use them lightly, few messages a day will be sufficient. don’t burn yourself out by using it extensively for the first week and abandoning it the next…

  11. I signed up yesterday to check a bit around, seriously it is not very user friendly..

  12. Children says:

Twitter has made up its way to the list, but now it depends upon the users! i believe i’ll let myself be tempted!!

  13. PS3 says:

I agree with you Ade, if you force yourself to use anything in a way that encumbers you, then you will surely give up on it.

Use things for what they are intended, do not try to mode them to satisfy another need.

I’m still one of those resisting the urge to Tweet. It just seems a little too much info to me. The plugin you mention is kinda cool, but I agree with one of the other commenters, that RSS readers really server that purpose. I much prefer using my google reader when I have the time to check my favorite blogs. I have enough daily distractions already making me unproductive. ;)

This was a very interesting post and really made me think about how much impact twitter can have. One should note that Jason Calacanus gets so much traffic from twitter because he has thousands of followers – 9000 at the time of the quote, 26,000ish currently.

  16. I don’t really know what twitter is but I’m sure I’ll check it out sooner or later.
