Blogs with good content but with tons of ads on them, which are very difficult to read, and usually take long time to load — will increase their RSS count. Why? Because people want to read such blogs through RSS readers, without the ads and all the discomfort. But is it a good strategy? Well, I would choose usability instead of higher RSS count. How about you?

I would prefer usability too, but if the ads are monetizing the blog it is a bit of a catch 22 situation.

You can always insert into your blog post so that after reading a bit of your post on RSS reader they will have to visit your blog to read the rest.

Usability here, too. John Chow has no problem with all his ads, however. So I don’t know. I think a blog needs to go through two phases: (1) focus on content only and no monetization; (2) once the readership is up, monetize, and you’ll be fine.
