Guide on blog posting frequency - part 1
Guide on blog posting frequency - part 2
Guide on blog posting frequency - part 3
People often ask how many posts I should post per day? How many per week? The answer depends on what is your blog’s objective? What do you want to achieve with your blog?
I called it “guide” because I think I have pretty much solved the issue about the number of posts one should post per day, week..etc I have been testing it for the last 3 months and the results were identical to what I anticipated. Post frequency will depend on your blog’s objective. Generally we can divide the blogs into three categories according to their objectives.
Objectives
- 1. Increase traffic, increase RSS subscriptions, increase PR
- 2. Establishing authority in certain field
- 3. Diary, ramblings, personal blog, hobby
1. Increase traffic, increase RSS subscriptions, increase PR
This category dominates the internet, at least it dominates the “make money online” blogs. People want to have more traffic, more RSS subscriptions and higher PR, so that they can charge higher ad and higher paid review prices. The objective here is to make more money. The owners of these blogs want to make more money every month, if possible. But some of the bloggers in this category do not know their ppd frequency (post-per-day - i just made that acronym up ;). Basically they know their objective but they do not know how to achieve it.
This is how they want their graphs to look:

Post-Per-Day Frequency
If you are in this category and if you want to increase your traffic, RSS subscribers, and PR then you need to publish at least one quality article per day, or up to 3 (but not more than 3) posts a day. “Quality” is the keyword here. The idea is simple here. You want your regular readers to come to your blog as frequently as possible. That means you want them to visit at least once a day, if they visit few times a day, that is even better.
Question: Why would people want to check your blog every day? Because they want to read your quality posts, and they do not want to miss it. So here, you need to meet or exceed your readers expectations. If you under-deliver, that will be a disadvantage for you. And if you constantly under-deliver (i.e posting lots of paid reviews, posting irrelevant posts, posting too many youtube videos, writing not well researched articles…etc) then you can expect the number of your readers to decrease over time.
Everyday well written quality posts means, higher new RSS subscriptions too. Because when a user stumbles upon your blog, and sees that you have tons of great posts. For sure, he will bookmark it and he will subscribe to your RSS.
Question: Why not few posts a week, instead of eveyday? Some blogs do follow this principle even though their objective is to increase traffic, rss and pagerank. You need to realize that few times a week means few times visit by your regular readers. Your readers do follow your schedule, at least over time they will get to know your schedule and will follow that. If he/she has the perception that “ah, this blog posts few articles a week” then he/she will do exactly that, visit one or twice a week only. Because they will think they could read all your posts (that is 3-4 posts) that you posted in a week within one day only.
So, if you want your regular readers to visit your blog everyday, start writing at least one quality article per day. If you do that consistently (i cannot stress enough this, consistency is very important) for the next 2-3 months, believe me, you will see a sharp increase in your traffic, rss and hopefully pagerank too. If it’s a new blog with PR0, I am sure if you do that for the next 3-4 months, you will get at least PR3 or 4 for the next PR update.
Tip: If you post more than one article per day, then do not post them all at once. Give few hours between posts. Let the readers check back your blog after few hours to read your second article, and after few hours to read your third article…etc. Get the idea? ;)

I can’t hardly wait for the next part of this article. Especially because you won’t limit yourself to writing about the obvious “make money online” niche.
Just a question: why have you implied that one shouldn’t post more than 3 quality posts per day? Why wouldn’t 4 or 5 be a good amount? Maybe you meant that more than 3 would be too much, but I just want to be sure. ;-)

Hi Karen,
Thank you for your feedback. First of all, it would be really difficult to write 4-5 good posts a day, when I say good posts, I mean lengthy, well researched posts. Secondly, it would be difficult for your readers to read that many posts a day, especially when you are writing long posts. You need to consider your readers’ time as well, they have other blogs to read too. Therefore 1-3 posts per day is a good frequency. Actually 3 long posts still can be overwhelming, so having a combination of long and short posts up to 3 posts per day is a good practice. Finally, please note that it’s my personal opinion only, it’s definitely not to be used as a guide for every blog.

I wouldn’t really agree with this mentality. I don’t publish daily, yet my traffic/subscribers have been going up consistently. Posting daily is not necessary to increase your RSS subscribers, I can tell you that for sure.
I’m not sure why you correlate PR to posting frequency as well. It seems like an irrelevant factor to consider. And if you truly want to ‘increase your PR’, why not publish quality, link-worthy articles every few days instead of writing daily posts which will inevitably be repetitive in some way?
These sort of articles are the ones that you get you the most subscribers and links.

Hi Maki,
I believe your blog belongs to the part-2 of this article, which is: Establishing authority in certain field. Blogs that have some authority in certain field do not need to post everyday. Rather they will need to post quality posts.
Thanks.

3 “good” or “worthwhile” posts a day is quiet a lot. The risk is that you post any old rubbish just to get something on there.
One good article is the way to go.
