Sneak Peak to WordPress 2.3’s new WYSIWYG

I tested WordPress 2.3 today, it looked not much different than the previous version, as far as the user interface is concerned. However as the development team said, it’s more than a skin deep. Some of these skin deep features that are not visible to the eye in v2.3 are:

  • Full and complete Atom 1.0 support, including the publishing protocol.
  • New jQuery which is 800% faster.
  • Behind the user-facing tags system is a really great taxonomy system, which adds a ton of flexibility. It’s probably the biggest schema upgrade since version 1.5.
  • The importers have been revamped to be more memory efficient, and you can now add an importer through a plugin.
  • Through hooks and filters you can now override the update system, the dashboard RSS feeds, the feed parser, and tons more than you could in 2.2.
  • The new $wpdb->prepare() way of doing SQL queries.

New, more advanced WYSIWYG

But what you will notice most is the new, more advanced WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) feature for the post page. Here is the screenshot.

A closer look:

As you notice, there is a tag field under the post field too. Now you can add tags to your posts directly at the time of the posting. With tags, you can do your own tag clouds, categorization, and improve your search results within the blog. By adding specific keywords to the post, readers will be able to find them easily.

Should you upgrade now?

If you are using lots of plugins at the moment, then you should wait a while until your plugins are updated. But if you are not using that many plugins, it’s recommended that you upgrade now. I see that most of the plugins are already compatible with WP2.3.

As for me I will wait a bit, and probably update it when I redesign my blog. I do have plans to change the blog design before the year end. It all will depend on my schedule, if I will have more free time, it will be sooner than that.

By the way, you are welcome to share your thoughts and critiques on the current theme. Also please let me know what kind of theme you would like to see for the new version (i.e white background, liquid design…etc)?
