Truemors.com, Guy Kawasaki, WordPress and the Cost

Have you heard of Truemors.com? If not, it’s a website that publishes rumors (i despise all rumors, be it true or false). It’s a digg like website that is entirely user generated. It’s a project of Guy Kawasaki, if you do not know who he is then he is the author of the book called The Art of the Start. Guy writes in his blog that Truemors cost him little over USD 12K. He argues that it was very cheap for him, considering the amounts he used to spend for other projects (millions). In his own words:

$12,107.09. In total, I spent $12,107.09 to launch Truemors. During the dotcom days, entrepreneurs had to raise $5 million to try stupid ideas. Now I’ve proven that you can do it for $12,107.09.

While he considers that cheap, 12K. I believe he could reduce the cost even further, after all it’s a website that sits on WordPress.

There are hundreds of experienced programmers sitting on www.RentACoder.com or on similar sites that could do this kind of project for much much less. Also he spent way too much on domain names ($1,115.05, see No.3) and he registered way too many domains (55 in total .com, .net, .biz, .info….etc, see No.7). I believe domains with the extension .com and .net would have sufficed. Well, the guy has lots of money what you can say.

Do read his post on his blog about it. You do learn a lot from these experienced VCs, but at the same time don’t just follow blindly what people say. If you know you can do it better than them, or for a lot less cost, then go for it!
