How I shifted to Google (RSS) reader, finally.
I have used FeedDemon for reading blogs and news for a long time. It’s a nice software, it’s easy and usable. However there was one disadvantage using a stand-alone desktop software like FeedDemon. I could only use it at home, while I am on my PC (or on my laptop which 98% of the time stays at home too).
To solve that problem I had signed up with bloglines and exported all my blogs from FeedDemon to Bloglines. FeedDemon has a feature to export all or some blogs as OPML file. So Bloglines worked great, my accessibility problem was solved!
However now, there was another problem, problem of logging into one more extra website while I am online. Usually I will log into my Gmail, Yahoo!Mail, My Blog, AdSense and the list goes on… So logging into one more website was not fun. And then I thought, I use my Gmail everyday so why not I just use Google Reader instead? Because when you log into Gmail you are automatically logged into your Google Reader as well. And the link is just there, easy to access… right inside the Gmail.

So far so good, I am not sure what other issues might arise by using Google Reader. But for now, I am satisfied with the solution.

I use Netvibes as my personal start page, with all my rss, mail accounts and more…
- Netvibes is a great site, but I tend to not use start pages…

I’ve used GoogleReader for a while now and I love it. You can add a summary panel to your google personalised homepage which I have as my homepage so everytime I visit google (alot) I see the 10 latest feeds.
Also the search to add feeds works very well just type something like “bbc sport” in the add feed box and you’re offered all related feeds to subscribe to.
- That’s a great feature (typing a keyword in the “add feed” field). Thanks, I didn’t know that.

Hi,
I started using FeedDemon almost a year ago. Before that I used Thunderbird.
Although I loved it, and I preferred it over FeedDemon, as having email and RSS news items in the same place was great, there was a big problem:
When moving from one computer to the other I ended up coming across the same news as there was no synchronization. With a desktop at home, the laptop, and a computer at work, this was a terrible waste of time.
Basically, I use FeedDemon because of the synchronization, and more recently, because of the items that can be stored in your account.
Sometimes I’d go on holidays for a week. When I came back, many of the news for the week were lost. Now they store up to 200, I think.
These two features are unbeatable. Does Google Reader offer anything like this? Can you live without them? What do you do?
As it’s a web reader, it’s one location only, so synchronization isn’t an issue. What about lost news?
Don’t you prefer a desktop application?
- You have a point! Google Reader can show all the posts, but there is no post saving feature. That means if the site is down or if the posts are deleted you cannot read them again.
I might use FeedDemon back (for post saving feature) when I go for a long break! Thanks for bringing this up.

Previously I used FeedDemon too but when the problem of syncronizing got me crazy I moved to BlogLines. BlogLines disappointed me and I quickly moved to Google Reader and now I am almost fully satisfied. And of course in the same way as you Ades, I am happy because I need to login once and then can use a lot of services provided by Google.

I used to use google reader, but I recently found http://www.itsmynews.com and i like it better. I think the layout is cleaner and they have more feeds. I think you should all give them a look and see for yourselves how you like them.
