Mac like effects on Google, was live only 1 day

While we are still in the Apple topic, here is an interesting history news. Google X was a Mac-like interface for Google (see above image) that was developed in Google Labs in 2005. Apparently the application was only live for one day. After which Google has removed it to prevent a suit from Apple.

    can UI be patented? i mean, does apple own that kind of UI?

    I think the idea can be patented, in this case fisheye effect of Apple might be copyrighted.
