100Plus - Bad Usability (off the web)

100plus bad usability

100Plus is an isotonic drink in Malaysia, it’s produced under F&N Coca-Cola. Previously 1.5L bottles had a design like any other soft drink, but in 2006 they have changed the design of the bottle to somewhat cone shaped one. As you can see from the images above, this design has a big usability problem. The plastic around the bottle slides out when you hold the bottle.

I have seen this happen at the supermarket counters few times, and I have experienced it first hand one or two times at home (after which I learned not to hold over the plastic).

Amazing thing is that this design has been out there for so many months and the company has not taken any corrective measures. Instead at their official product site the first thing you see is a big banner about this (faulty) new design.

I really hope they will do something about this, because this is not only a bad usability but a danger to the people. I am not sure if there was a case in Malaysia, but it can easily break or hurt someone if the 1.5 liter drink drops to someone’s toes.

You may contact the 100Plus’ officials here: contact form.

Google Referrals to include non-Google products

Soon all AdSense publishers will be able to get paid for referring users to any product in the AdWords network. Currently publishers are paid for referring people to Google products (AdSense, Picasa, AdWords…etc) only. With the introduction of Google Referrals publishers will be able to choose which product they want to display on the website. It’s still in beta version so not all publishers are approved, however you may try your luck, sign up here. [you need to have AdSense account in order to sign up for AdSense Referrals.

Here is how the system works:

phpAdsNew is now OpenAds.org

One of the most popular ad management scripts phpAdsNew has been rebranded as OpenAds. Good news is that, it will still stay FREE! (Open Source)

Google Adsense click-tracking integration
OpenAds now allows you to track your AdSense ads, previously phpAdsNew could only show the statistics for displaying the AdSense ads, but now it has the ability to track the clicks. OpenAds does not actually modify the HTML since that would be in violation of the Google AdSense terms and conditions. Instead, Google AdSense ads are automatically detected and handled as a special case using some clever Javascript techniques.

People at OpenAds say: “The developers behind Openads are the same people who brought you phpAdsNew, phpPgAds and Max Media Manager products. phpAdsNew users can rest assured that their favourite product - as Openads 2.0 - will receive continued support and planned development in the years to come.”

Well, that’s good to know! www.openads.org

Economist.com talks about Agloco.

Working the crowd

…Yet another example, established by a group of Stanford graduates, is Agloco. “Advertisers, search providers and online retailers are paying billions to reach you while you surf,” says its website. “How much of that money are you getting? You deserve a piece of the action.” Like AttentionTrust, Agloco is based on a browser plug-in that tracks users’ online activity and then uses this information to allow advertisers to target people with specific interests. Agloco promises to return 90% of ad revenue, sales commissions and other income to its users. In a further twist, those who recruit other users get a cut of the revenue, too. Akshay Mavani of Agloco says the firm is on target to sign up 10m users by July…

Free fonts at DesignerInAction.de

DesignerInAction has a nice collection of free fonts for Web Designers. Their collection is not a lot like other sites (some sites have too many fonts until you do not know which one to download) but they have the nice fonts that web designers really need. Though the site is in German, it should not be an obstacle to browse the fonts section.

Wikipedia to launch own Search Engine

wikipedia search engine

After transforming the web-encyclopedia to a new level, Wikipedia now is ready to take on Google and Yahoo! by launching its own Search Engine called Search Wikia. Wikipedia will be using Nutch and Lucene and other technologies for this new type of search engine. I hope Wikia will be something totally new that will allow us to find the right information efficiently.

Usually Google displays Wikipedia in the search results quite high, I am not sure if it will be the same after the Wikia is launched. After all they will be competitors after this.
