When is the right time to start your own blog?
Have you been wondering if you should start your own blog? I had the same feeling at one time, I was thinking if I should start my own blog or not. The reason why I started this blog was not because everybody out there had one, but because it was the right solution to my ever growing bookmarks as well as my interest in search engines, web technologies, and web design.
I will try to give you some insights from my own experience and hopefully they will help you to decide whether to start your own blog or not. If you are doing one or more of the things below then you are ready to start your own blog anytime:
- Bookmarking lots of sites
At one time I found myself bookmarking lots of sites, either because they offered a nice service or it was something that I might needed in the future. So I kept bookmarking these sites, when I was not on my PC I kept sending these bookmarks to my email. At the end it was getting too much to handle, I needed a place where I could document them and keep them for my future use. Blog was the solution, I could post them online and access them from anywhere. - Reading lots of blogs
Do you have RSS reader installed on your PC or have an online RSS reader such as bloglines? Do you find yourself reading lots of blogs everyday? Then that’s a good thing, you could be easily writing several posts a day if you are updated with news everyday. - Interested in specific topics
Do you have a topic of interest? It can be anything not necassarily about IT or Web. The more niche the topic is the better, because there are people that have the same interest with you. And they are willing to read your posts. And hopefully the blogs that you read (in point 2) are of this topic.
How to start?
You can start by opening a free blog at www.blogger.com or registering your domain name and hosting of your own at www.godaddy.com and installing blogging tool called www.wordpress.org. Most of the time people start with free blog service, then they realize that they want more flexibility, more functions in their blog, a better design, own domain name…etc As a result when they shift their existing blog to their own domain name they loose their listings in the Search Engines, with that they loose traffic to their blog, and if their blog had a better PageRank before, then the new PageRank will be “zero”!
So before you start a blog try to visualize your blog in the future, how do you see your blog in the next 12 months? What do you see?
